EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Here are closer pictures of the chicks, with there names. They are kinda silly names, but they will fit in with all my other birds and their crazy names! How is that one chick you hatched?
@Sally Sunshine

so you cant dehydrate them   like make a sun dehydrator?

This is the one I want to build...http://gardenclub.homedepot.com/build-a-dehydrator/

Never thought about dehydrator. Have to give that a try if they don't dry out. Or hang them by the wood stove in the barn.

Quote: Awesome I like you very much but as you know I would not cook for myself lol. So I think thats awesome!

I really really enjoy cooking for fun. I get it from my mother (all a great cook) - it's what we talk about a lot of the time. So part of the reason I like this holiday is that I'm at home without anyone expecting a meal by a certain time, and can enjoy cooking whatever I want. I often don't have time to spend all day cooking anymore, even on weekends, now that I have the chickens.

In fact, I took advantage of the holiday to make flan for the first time yesterday (it turned out well) - I've been working my way through egg-heavy recipes I used to ignore, since I now have an abundance of eggs nearly all the time.

I had turkey tacos for lunch today, still plenty of leftovers for sandwiches, and I have a GIANT stock pot simmering away on the stove with the turkey carcass and neck, and some onions, ginger, carrots, and cinnamon sticks. Gonna make a LOT of stock... The only downside is that I don't have a dishwasher, and every time I get the kitchen clean, it's dirty again within hours! I like cooking. Washing dishes, not so much...
Quote: Is she a blue copper marans? I have three, and find them lovely! They are all a little different (some darker, some lighter, some with the brownish coloring). They are adorable... (I'll see if I can get some photos).

(I'm biased - my neighbor's guinea sounds like a car alarm going off - though I should be thankful, as she doesn't complain about my roosters...)
The frost killed my luffa plants so I picked the ripest gourds to hang in the barn and finish drying, I picked 113 off 5 plants

Not bad for plants that didn't flower till July.

Good luck - I've always dried them on the plant. I had a huge crop one year, but got overwhelmed with other stuff, and the dried ones got wet in a rainstorm and rotted. I have a few dried on the volunteer vine from this year that I brought inside. Thanks for reminding me that I need to go ahead and process them.

Here is one of the smaller ones:

I cut the ends off to shake out the seeds (I'll keep them) - I'm going to peel it in front of the TV tonight.

Uncle Jeremy with his little nephew Carson..... 10 pounds and 23 inches.

He goes home tomorrow.
Thanks for the update - so glad he's going home!

Duuuuuuuuude!!!!! Your Dad is SANTA?!

Wait...

At first I was going to say that that was cool, and that you must get a lot of cool presents, but then I rethought my own childhood, so...

Did you have to spend a lot of time shoveling reindeer poop?

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

@casportpony @ChickenCanoe I found a still warm, but dead chicken when I was doing chores. Kristy was still warm. I would like your advice on what I need to do.
I saw her last night when I got home late and she was lathargic. I did not see anything obvious wrong, and I did not feel an egg, but I am not sure what I am/was doing. Tonight she was found with poop on her (yesterday I noticed a bit of poop on her bum, but it was just a little bit). I took a couple of pictures and then put her in the fridge until I could get a chance to ask what I should do. Should I attempt an autopsy even though I have no clue (is there information on how), do I need to send her somewhere, or should I just let it go? One other bird has just a bit on her feathers, but everyone else seems fine. She was a March chick a green egg layer (Ameraucana over RIR).

WARNING dead chicken pictures.

Dax, I'm so sorry to hear this.

You did good putting her in the fridge - I am blanking on which state you are in for some reason (I should remember), but some states will allow free necropsies. Kathy will know - hopefully she'll pop on later. @casportpony

Danke! She's a mutt with some sultan somewhere in her ancestry.

:lau

That's loco's line... :P

I've had many arguments with myself wondering if setting eggs now is insane or a good idea. :barnie
