EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hi guys! I need some advice again. Today is day 20 of my first incubation ( I originally thought today was day 21, and then I realized I had been calculating it wrong) anyway, I'm down to 4 viable eggs out of 8. They had all been moving and rocking until today. I only witnessed 2 of them moving. Totally normal? Or should I be worried? I mean, I am worried

but should I stop!?! No pips, no peeping in shell. Also I had read in the incubation thread to keep the temp at 98-98.5 degrees for the last three days. I have a still air, should I bump it to 99-99.5? Thanks in advance!
Hi Ladyfarm, wait and see what happens, what temp have you run in still air from the start?

what have you done with humidity? and did you calibrate thermo/hygros?

in case you ran low....

oh I see!!!

They do that at the elementary school! Lucas was evaluated for the gifted program that way and then he had to do tests and sit with the school psychologist and they made us fill out so much paperwork I was about to say, NO leave us alone!!!

I did calibrate them. I ran the humidity low, started at around 30% noticed smallish air cells so I ran even lower, 20-25% temps were between 101.3 and 101.9. I have read the entire thread about incubation several times, even took screen shots to remember! Lol my temps since lockdown have been 98.5 ish. I just bumped it up a tiny bit, and the humidity has been 65-70%.

Well, thanks though for you tonight my popular use of soporific about my fire over turkey may be more apropos.

I liked them both. Feckless was so apropos.

Oh, I loved that one as well!!!! I think I didn't comment on it because I was, well, rather sleepy myself during the read back.

I have a lovely collection of essays by Anne Fadiman called Ex Libris, which I adore The essay "The Joy of Sesquipedalians" is about a quiz made of the 22 words she (as someone with a very good vocabulary) did NOT know in a book she was reading (The Tiger in the House by Carl Van Vechten, written in the 1920s). Her brother knew 9, her father knew 12.

How many do you guys know (WITHOUT looking them up)?

monophysite

(I only knew three when I read this.)

(edit: OMG, BYC autocorrected her last name to "Radioman"!)
I've only ever heard a few and knew none well enough to comfortably use them in a sentence.
Most are only in the unabridged dictionary or the new lexicon.

I love the English language but when one writes, they are only supposed to use words and expressions at the 5th grade level so the majority of one's audience will understand. SAD!

Has anyone played the game 'Balderdash'? There are cards with very obscure actual words that most people wouldn't be familiar with that one player reads and everyone has to write down a definition of the word. The one reader then reads all the definitions along with the real one and people vote for the correct definition. The person with the most votes for their bogus definition wins.
It is one of the most fun games I've played. The more players the better. Too few and people will see a trend in answers and be able to identify who wrote them.

All these $5 words are giving me a massive headache

Didn't see a thing today. We can take 1 buck, more with a special tag, but any buck I take is gonna have to be a bragger; does eat better. Have a 3-day archery season going on now, then 2 weeks of muzzleloader.
Are you participating in either of those?

I know two with three more I am questioning myself on. Some of them I have never seen before.
@Fire Ant Farm
You are so perspicacious.

You can go invisible?

-Kathy
After seeing the original movie "The Invisible Man" as I kid, I had fantasies about being invisible.

Sorry I only went back 600 posts; was all I could read thru in an hour.

Night peeps

You did great.

Hey all!! I'm on my third hatch now. Last thing to hatch was a handful of quail about 10+ days ago, and I put 8 more on right away, so I'm going into lockdown for those soon.

My question was though;
(With a short back story)

I've been looking for Buff Orpingtons everywhere and finally got my hands on some from a breeder. He had roosters in with the girls I bought off of him, so I did the reasourceful thing and chucked all the eggs that my new Big fat ladies laid into the incubator. Sure enough, a couple were fertile, and I'm expecting two lovely little Orpington chicks soon in about a week's time.

The catch is! One of the eggs was like a day (or two?) later to be set. So I was wondering if it would be chill for me to put them both into lockdown at the same time? Just because I want them to be able to chat while positioning and pipping away. (I like the three day lockdown, so D-18 for chooks, D-15 quail)

Advice anyone??

Thanks!

I stagger frequently. - Hatches, I mean.
I would wait till day 19 or 20 for the first eggs to 'lockdown'. As long as enough moisture has been lost in the egg, higher humidity isn't essential till pip.

E. It's hard for me to explain, but basically the lights aren't turning off and on quickly enough. The lights go off at 100 (yay!) but they don't turn on again until 95, or with some tinkering that somehow changed it but I don't know why, 98.

(I turned the thermostat control back and forth and wiggled it. Why that changed it, I have notta clue...)

I'm horrible at describing stuff, sorry. hmm.png

I do think I was able to fix the previous problem with what I did in the upgrades, which was to tighten the loose screws that were holding it to the bator.

It happened again this mornin, but only was goin down to 97....
I put a blanket over it at night, and this reading is taken the instant I take it off? I don't see how the blanket could impact it, bit thought I'd throw that out there.... You'd think if it was ambient temp it'd be down all the time, not just swinging.
The problem with blankets are twofold. Temp can rise too high and you may inhibit oxygen.

Incandescent lights generate heat but are prone to failure when they cycle on and off too frequently. They all have a duty cycle that causes them to fail - at the most inappropriate time. If you still want to use your screw in fixtures, you an switch to a ceramic heat emitter.
I prefer metallic heat elements that last much longer. You can still use some type of lamp in the circuit if you want to determine when power is being applied but you can get away with an LED or 7 watt incandescent.

Hawk out back watching the chickens!!!! different kind looked pretty much cream speckled brown color uggggg at least they are in a run and not free ranging, although not sure that is better since its opentop but in the woods
You need a Peterson's guide to Birds of the Eastern US.
https://www.amazon.com/Peterson-Eastern-Central-America-Guides/dp/0547152469

Not that it matters. Any hawk can kill a chicken.
Cover in the form of brush in the run helps.
I had a hawk fly through a 40' long, 3' high hoop pen to get to some freedom rangers.
Well, it was drizzling/sprinkling here this morning when I did chores. Unlike you though it was 33 here which I am enjoying after the single digits the other day, and the cold weekend we are expecting.
So what is on your agenda today?
It's going to be a wild ride temperature wise. It was supposed to hit 35 here today but hasn't gotten over 31 and is now dropping. Teens the next 3 nights then 32 day and night Friday. 52 Saturday with rain and 8 Saturday night. Very cold Sunday and Sunday night. If you can get your rooster through till Monday, I think we're out of the woods for cold till January and this weekend may be the worst of the winter.

I'm still not understanding your rooster's issues. It is virtually the same weather her most of the time and my birds are in buildings with huge ventilation. Same breed, same strain, same weather. Frostbite issues take several days to show their worst damage so I don't think opening up the building did more damage. At 5 AM, the inside of an unheated building will be virtually the same temperature inside as out whether it is closed up or not, so I opt for better fresh air.
Saturday night will be tough here because the humidity will be sky high when the bottom drops out.

The only way I'd close up a building is if I could add enough heat to get it above freezing. Then you still have the issue with bad air from ammonia, fungus, bacteria and virus.

i could stick with 5 gal buckets with lids and get this opener, for easier opening

I wish I knew someone that used this 35lb cat litter box but not sure on the lid keeping closed with goats

That opener is essential. I bought a couple off of Ebay. I get lots of food grade pickle buckets free and keep most seed, grain and some feed in them.
The kitty litter box leaked on me and ruined lots of my pasture seed.

we had one this summer! not long though, they are HUGE!!!!!

and she will be ooing and awwwing and you will strive to take the most adorable images for her to fret about lol

Eagle days are coming here very soon.

1 layer, yes

Think I should check the lighting section in the store the next time I go into town?
Keep in mind that a LG incubator uses a 40W heat element and I think at least one other manufacturer does too.

For those needing replacement vent plugs for incubators.

Been a heck of a morning. I'll spare you guys the details. But let's just say I HATE doing extra, avoidable laundry. ^.^
Bless you. Have strength.

I've got a 30 gallon barrel I've been thinking about making into a feeder. Need to figure out something for the lid aspect of it though.

These places have lids and bungs for virtually any kind of barrel.

There is another and better one I found but don't know were it is right now.
@Sally Sunshine
I had to come in out of the blind to make this reply, since I still can't do it on the 'puter in the blind. I hope you appreciate the sacrifices I'm willing to make for you!

I just want to give you a heads-up.

I had one of those buildings like your dad gave you. I called mine the "paper building". They're not cheap, money-wise, when you factor in how long they last. Yes, they are thicker than a regular tarp, and UV doesn't deteriorate them as quickly, although mine didn't last long enough for UV to be a problem.

The big problem with them is wind. They'd probably work out o.k. in a location that's protected from strong winds, like next to a shed or a block building, on the lee side. Mine, however, was out in the open, away from any protecting solid structures, and the wind literally shredded it in a relatively short time.
I bought one of those from Harbor Freight and a windstorm destroyed it. I built a chicken tractor out of the remains.

Well, I am so torn. I am so worried about the cock, but what about quarantine? I t is supposed to be much colder going into the weekend and his comb and wadfles look bad. Since he is from Paddler. Should I just put him in a dog crate in my main coop. He will not deal with the extended cold with his case of frostbite.
