EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

You can disqualify the JUDGE from the exact reason! :lau

I am thinking this would get me disqualified!!! :lau    The judge that disqualified the birds was a young 30ish woman, very good looking (I am old so everyone under 50 is good looking)...

I can see all kinds of trouble asking her to take her shoes and stocking off so I can check between her toes...Not to mention a nasty discussion (one where I mainly listen) coming from the WWD.

I was thinking more of this kind of judge :lau

And not this kind!

(I could get a much S... pic, but we have youngsters here! )

I think it is sad.
They were bred with good intentions, however they kind back fired.
The are an Israeli development. Look how happy they are! :lau
A ballet-dancing naked chicken. It's a pure wonder why everyone world-wide wouldn't want one.
We have done this discussion previously They have the highest feed to weight ratio in any chicken breed.
Indeed we have, and they were previously just as ugly as they are now :lau
Yes indeed, but imagine how easy is to process it! Cut, burn , gut, cook!
You're absolutely right, and those are, no doubt, the primary reasons for their development, but I couldn't bring myself to look at them long enough to bring them to butchering weight.
I guess this is the reason why no one here have them!

Good morning everyone! I'm blaming all of you coffee chugging monsters for getting me hooked on coffee again! The percolator isn't working fast enough this morning lol.

@Sally Sunshine , the turkeys have started laying! I found a secret nest up in their loft yesterday so I have 6 eggs in the bator to test fertility

I always did doily crochet with the fine needles and thread, reason being thats what I was taught by Nana. I had to stop several years ago because I cant see anymore, I made several big regular crochet blankets and all that normal stuff, but it just isnt the same. Plus the RA in my hands pretty much put an end to all that stuff, drawing, pen and ink etc. Heck I cant even write anymore it looks like another language.

Quote: I saw where you said the shells are thick/hard, are they porous at all?

So, um, am I alone in having strict no-chicken shoes and doing the whole biosecurity Virton-for-disinfecting-shoes thing?
hide.gif
I don't do any biosecurity, I free range and wild birds all over anyways.
Not really - not that I can really note (but maybe the darkness is throwing me off?). They are speckled, though (darker spots).

Eggs that lose too much moisture because of low humidity levels, produce a larger air space but a smaller, weaker youngster is formed in the remaining space and will probably die before or during the hatch.

Well, what will be, will be. The temperatures and humidity have stabilized more now that I moved the eggs/cartons - I think that the way I had them in there might have been messing with the circulation.

Oh no!! I completely forgot about updating the hatcher lists!!

BAD BUBBLES, go sit in the corner...

I've still got all the links in my email so I'll go run update it quick.
Can you add me? I'm on Day 15, lockdown on Sunday. Set 12 GNH x NN eggs, still have 10 alive and kicking (literally), also set 6 Marans x Ameraucana eggs, hard to tell if they're ok, air cells are way too big, we'll see if they hatch/survive.

(I MIGHT be setting more eggs this weekend...

uggggg sorry Kristin, were those air cells bigger when you first set them?
The have done studies on putting paraffin on part of eggs to control weight loss, as well as adding cotton balls, about the only thing I will suggest is putting them in some sort of container or adding something to block the fans air on them for now.

Arthritis (at least I guess that's what it was) is what caused me to quit decorative leather carving; hands hurt using the knife.
For 6 months or more after Shingles hit my right hand & arm, I couldn't even write my own name; had to make an "X" whenever I had to sign anything. Even today it can be pretty sloppy.
