I think you did better than me.

I have 7 fuzzies and 9 eggs that did not hatch.

My hatch rate is about 12% with all I set. and less than 50%

But the ones I have are cuties. I am not going to open the incubator today. I have a few more pipped and have my fingers crossed for them but not holding out much hope.




Morning, and more snow here so I will be plowing snow most the day again in the cold......

Thanks! Well, we both live somewhere warm - short of catching them coming out of the hen, I don't know how you manage getting unfrozen eggs to incubate!

Need to pick your brain. Being's you're in the construction trade, maybe you can help me.

I'm looking for a dual wheel, pnumatic tire, steel tub wheelbarrow with the largest capacity available to haul firewood from the wood pile to the house. I had one years ago, so I know they're available, somewhere; or were, anyway. I've been all over the internet this morning, and everything I find has a poly tub. I've gone through two of them; they don't last in below freezing weather when I toss wood into them. The current one broke the bottom the 1st or 2nd time I used it, and the flat-free tires are a b____h to push in snow.

I've tried Lowes, Amazon, Northern Tool, and countless others with no luck.

Any ideas?

I keep the lights off and used a flashlight, to look into the hatcher. As soon as I shined the light the 7 cam running to the window and gazed up at me. If chicks can melt a cold hearted old crotchety man like me I feel sorry for you softies (and those soft enough to love dux especially).....

They are like a control substance, you are correct at that.

Thanks technically I had a 69. Something something something% hatch but I'm calling it 70%

Ya know my brother in law says he's hatched eggs that were frozen.

Seeing a chick look up at you that way with complete trust is one of the bestest feelings ever.

Dan, I did not actually compute my rate it was so dismal. I just did rough numbers in my head.. However, I am so old I learned old math so I have that skill....


I am thinking of getting ahold of a 4h kid and giving her these chicks.

Ant: you are right the cold and dark does give us special challenges when hatching here. For me the fertility of the rooster is the big thing.

My bother did the calculations Sorry it was bad. lol.

That's an idea! My sister runs 4-H, I might ask her if she knows anyone who might want these.

Yeah, that was the other thing I was thinking... Is fertility a predictable issue when it's really cold? Or dark?

Well I set 18 eggs and 16 made it to lock down. So so far, based on eggs set, I'm at 12/18 or 67%, and based on those that were fertile, 12/16 or 75%. If the ones that have pipped hatch, I'll get 87.5%!

The weird apex pip is moving, so hopefully the little one drying off will have a little friend soon.
