EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

@Fire Ant Farm Are NN relatively hard to get when bred with a non-NN? Because for as crazy as my NN roo is with these hens, I only have a total of 3 offspring, which are all different ages now, but also all could be from the female NN I have. I am afraid to breed the NN together for they may be too closely related, but I don't know. They came from the "Chick Days" event at our local feed store, and they literally had HUNDREDS of different breeds of chickens. Is there a way to tell if they are related? The roo is Red, and the hen is a creamy buffish with some reddish tone, like salmon maybe!

I mean compared to the 1 year I had NN Bantams that went broody and hatched out a 50% NN chicks, I am surprised I don't have more from these 2, and those were bantam hens, not any NN Roos that time.

Quote: Yeah, I'm redoing my paddocks, and although I wish I didn't have to, I'm really going to have to do overhead netting for the NN flock and Eggplant flock (the ones with escapers).

Got s total of 16 chicks out of the 24 eggs that were originally in the bator. And out of those 24 eggs, 16 were fertile, so all the eggs that were fertile hatched!

The 2 huge tan colored chicks are a cross between a BCM/Buff Orpington dad and a RIR mom

And the rest have an EE/Cuckoo Marans dad and moms that are either blue copper marans, black copper marans, EE, cuckoo marans, RIR, or welsummer

I lost another duck.

This time there was a body. I used the remains to bait the live trap. I have my suspicions... Who wants to play csi again?

No blood. Spine and leg picked clean. No flies or ants.
I'm so sorry!!!! Do you have the Storey's Guide to Raising Ducks? Appendix C has a REALLY good detailed description of typical "forensics" of attacks by different predators...

Maple's feet are now discoloured, swollen, and she won't bear weight on her right foot.

I'm not sure I understand, but you shouldn't worry about breeding the NNs together, if it was a Chick Days (hatchery) source. There's not the dire issues with "inbreeding" with chickens that people fear. Do you only have one roo, and it's NN? Or is it a situation of multiple roos? And you have multiple different pullets/hens of different types and don't know who the eggs are from?

Try also posting on the Naked Neck thread - might get some good thoughts there...

Well, folks, I spent my evening at a talk by Neil deGrasse Tyson. It was an ASTONISHINGLY good talk - I've listened to every single Star Talk podcast, and read his books, and worried about recycling of material, but except a few jokes and anecdotes, it was fresh and new. And that man moved ALL OVER that stage (oh, and he lectured in his socks.) I had AWESOME seats!

Row 2!!!!!

Looking backwards at the packed Tobin Center:

I also got to meet him (very briefly) - I was nervous and don't remember much. I just remember I sort of gushed like the fan girl that I am.

Fantastic!! Second row and you got to meet him in that awesome looking place, how awesome is that! He always talks so well, appealing to the young and old, new and not so new.. makes difficult subjects more accessible(and therefore fascinating) etc, that's just amazing. I like that representation of tree of life..

Thanks for the update, maybe for the next time, bring out the phone and show pictures of the
