EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

i think his next thing is to get pea combs on them, cant remember

That sounds right, because of the frostbite issue (like the boy in that photo).

He should used EEs or Ameraucanas and then his toads will lay Blue or green eggs instead of brown and he won't mix them up with his turkeys.

He is around 20-25 pounds.

I have showed this picture a lot to show just how big my toads are:

It is the best way for me to show it.

The bird on the left is a turkey (heritage) at 11lbs and 1 ounce. The one on the right is Bert's son at 15 lbs 4 ounces. Both are dressed with no giblets inside them.

When we piece these my wife and I get 5 meals out of them. We like to roast them because of the juice it retains when roasted. A drumstick or thigh is a full meal. The breast are 4 servings for us. 2 on each half.
Looks like a worthwhile project. I imagine the growth rate is good too.

@ChickenCanoe
I have only raised Freedom Rangers (label rouge), Cornish X and Black Penedesencas purposely for meat.
However I have eaten about 20 different breeds in total. Leghorns and Anconas are a bit on the thin side.

@ChickenCanoe , I looked but can't find the post where Ralphie explained, but his "toads" are the product of a meat bird project of his - he managed to raise CXs old enough to breed and lay (by restricting their feed and having them forage and exercise), and I think he crossed in Dixie Rainbows (which is a "slower" broiler you can get from some hatcheries), and now he is crossing back and refining. That is a full sized propane tank in the photo - they are the size of turkeys and don't have the leg and heart issues CXs do and he indicates that he doesn't have to restrict their feed like he does the CXs. He's done some very impressive work on management of Cornish Crosses regarding feed restriction and foraging behavior. I was going to try to emulate him and others, but ended up getting Naked Necks early, and left the CX idea behind after that.

Very interesting. Thanks for the rundown.

or a brahma so he doesnt lose size, but i dont think he wants the feathered legs

How about Jersey Giants. They have a small single comb. But they may grow too slowly for a true meat bird but will add good egg production.

I'm so sorry, Jess :hit
It's tough when you lose a friend like that.
I know; been there a few times myself.
We know when we get them that eventually this day will come, but that doesn't keep it from hurting when it does.
God bless, y'all  :hugs :hugs

So sorry for your loss.

Good Morning all!!!

from a terrible person,,,,,   Who  may never sell or ship another chick or egg to anyone fro BYC.. (sorry ticked off now)

Aurora I am so sorry to hear about your dog.  I really feel the pain. We are in the same position, my old dog is 11 and her hips are going. she falls a lot. 20 minutes  outside and she sleep for hours.  Every morning I check to see if she is still breathing when I first get up.  I am hoping y dog will go peacefully in her sleep like yours.  Sorry for your loss.

Thank you very much for sharing this. :goodpost:

:hit :hugs There are no words for the loss of an animal we loved, but at least it was peaceful. Feel free to share a memory. We understand and share your pain.

@Auroradream26
 I am so sorry about your pup... :hit

So sorry for your loss.  I lost my oldest dog in November, always sad to lose a pet.

Yummy!  Thank you! :love

Prayers for your wife and for your strength also.    Also, prayers that she will come to know our Lord and Savior.  When my mom was going through her chemotherapy, she led several people to the Lord while sitting in the chemo room sharing with other patients there.  Prayers that someone is put in your wife's path to share with her in the same way.

:yesss:

Thank you all. It's going to be very strange and difficult around here without her. She always woke everyone up every morning by howling in the kitchen for us to take her out if we were in bed too long. Every day, she would shove her way out the door, run and slam against the door to the garage to go out, and come bounding back in the house to the fridge for her breakfast. It was very unexpected and sudden. She was a realization of a dream for me as I'd always wanted a Siberian husky (hence the name, Dreamy). I'm thankful that she did go peacefully, overnight in her sleep. May we meet again one day at the rainbow bridge.

i think they look very tasty, and cant wait to start my own meat bird project

I read recently about fertility issues in rose and pea comb breeds. It has something to do with the comb size contributing to sperm motility. I'll see if I can find the article.
I do have this one.
