EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Yeah, I always have a spare.

I'm just glad I dumped mine, or I'd have to stomp on them for a while.....

One of the turkeys knocked the waterer off the heated base the other day. What a pain when the water freezes on it's side. the cover is frozen to the bottom, and they do not want to open. I had to bring it into the house to thaw before I could open it.

What kind of heater do you use? All I can find is ones that are only good down to something silly like 10°.... Yeah, like that's gonna help any....

I use the metal/steel water founts and a heated base. I have to chip the water out of the trough part on some days as it is ice but not frozen solid a lot of the time. I also have rubber "dog" dishes I can put water in and break the ice out the next day. The chickens learn to drink fast when I give them their water.

The double digit below zero days are not a fun time for me as I have to go out and water them everyday. There is no good waterer for the real cold. I have tried hay bales and insulation around the waterers, that does not help either.

I have a petition going to petition God to change the freezing temp for water to -20F. I think it is looking hopeful.

:lau Well, don't throw all your heated waterers out just yet... Somehow I still think you'll need them.
