There are now 13 flufffy butts in my bator!!!!!

Someone on another thread got his temperatures wrong (no calibration, I think, first time hatching), and had all unzipped unpipped (stupid BYC autocorrect) chicken eggs at 23 days, with one oozing and rotten that he took out. He went to bed, unplugged his 'bator on the morning of day 24, and then was walking by later and heard a peep. He plugged it back in, did an assist, and he has a live chick that seems ok so far. It's the season of miracles!!!! (And another reminder not to give up with low temps.)

Yeah... I'm still only down to one cup a day (he wants me on 1/2 cup a day caffeinated) - I was drinking about 3 every morning plus Diet Cokes at work. It's for migraine prevention, so if I drank too much and then ended up in his office wanting help again he'd just say, "I told you so."

It's a vicious circle.

Never could handle diet sodas, of any kind. I drank my share of regular sodas, 'specially Cream soda, but quit sodas altogether so long ago I can't remember.

I'm shocked.... You watch Abott and Costello?
Lots of ice so little time...

Don't be shocked that a lot of old timers here watched A&C and the 3 Stooges.

Also, if you are just raising a couple don't expect to make any money. It is too expensive in a small operation. You can't compete with bigger producers. The best I was able to do was raise a pair selling three sides for what I had in them, and everyone pays processing. They eat six pounds of feed a day or so so it can get expensive. Make sure you get a good deposit upfront so you don't loose too much if someone backs out.
All good information.
There is no money in small scale production unless one has a rare breed someone else really wants.
The economy of scale can provide some profit if one buys feed by the ton. That takes a lot of animals.
Where I grew up, small scale pork production was in the neighborhood of a couple thousand piglets a year grown out or sold as feeder pigs. Profitability was marginal.
Two neighbors were in that category. One raised his pigs in the forest with nothing more than a couple ponds and trough feeders. The other had fancy octagonal farrowing houses. The one with the farrowing houses averaged growing out about 1.5 more pigs per litter than the guy that let his pigs run the woods.
We were smaller scale with about 100 piglets or so per year and mostly for our use or to sell feeder pigs and occasionally fattening a few out to sell at the East St. Louis Stockyards.

I think these are small, pet pigs for her. (Gosh, so much work for not a lot of return...)
Pet pigs. What a waste of time.

Pigs are the coolest pets though.

When we were kids we were not allowed to have horses. My Dad hated them, claimed he spent too much time behind them working when he was a kid.

My Brother and I looked for horse substitutes. We would use the cows when we had to go get them from the pastures. This had 2 downfalls.

1) The cows did not like it or cooperate.
2) When Dad caught us riding a cow, he became quite unreasonable

So we moved on to the pigs. They were great. If you fall off a pig it is a short fall, the ground is mushy and soft around them. Dad did not seem to mind. The pigs learned their names and came running when called.

The only downfall is Dad sold or butchered them fairly often and we needed to train new pigs every summer.

Pigs are totally devoted to you if you rub their bellies.
I rode my share of pigs too, and a steer occasionally. But we did have horses.

I think I finally understand Ralphie. It's 80% sarcasm, 15% caustic wit, and 5% hatred of webbed things
Not far off the mark for a newbie.

My kids ride the goats, too ^.^ My rule is "if it'snot hurting them and they aren't scared of you, it's okay." if they don't like it, listen to the animal, or someone's gonna get hurt, and I'll make sure it's not the goat :P

(FWIW I make a lot of empty threats to my children, they know I'd never hurt them, but it gets my point across.)
Good point of view and advice.

It's a pot belly pig. Not the type of pig you eat! LOL

Think, tutu's, and belly rubs.

My kids are excited because they've been researching on how to potty train said pet pig so it can live in the house half the time.

Definitely not expecting to make any money. I have a hobby farm, I make extra money on the side to support my animal farm addiction. I lose hundreds per month and do it quite joyfully. LOL
Potbelly pigs are pigs and therefor are edible. Just not as productive for meat.

think spoiled, dog, but a pig.
I think that pig is embarrassed to be wearing a multicolored tutu. If not, it should be.

Good morning everybody

I had the worst time sleeping last night. I kept waking up thinking today was Monday and that I had Dr apts today. so I slept from like 10-1 and couldnt fall back asleep until 8 this morning

Long day here too.
I'm waiting for the scald water to cool down so I can process the 6 cockerels I killed this morning.
Trouble is I'm doing everything with zero help.
Then I have to get two 6 week old cockerels out into a coop but I have to make protected space in the only building they're appropriate for which already has adult birds.
And, and, and, and...

My best friend would probably clean my plow if I hugged him.
I try to forget Mr. Pillow even exists, but keep him handy just in case. I guess that makes me a user. Bad me!
You were up early this morning.

Sending you some "get-it -done" energy, since I seem to have woken up with a list bit of it this AM.

(An aside - I'm so irritated lately that I have to reread and correct every post because of the autocorrect travesties. Do you know how hard it is to type "UNPIPPED" and not have it changed to "unzipped"?

)

I'm on a roll getting things done - taking advantage while it lasts, you never know when there will be another "sloth attack". Have laundered the sheets, folded towels, swapped the big chicks from baby diapers on top of their MHP to a big washable puppy pad (they were totally fouling the diapers within a day). Currently soaking several poopy cloth diapers outside before they get bleached and laundered. Started setting up the third brooder for the Aloha NNs which are supposed to arrive February 21-22, and because Monkey's using the other "brooder" as a hospital pen, I need to now build a fourth one - making the lumber shopping list now. I also may see if other of my nurseries have any more tomato seedlings for me to buy and pot up - with all these chicks, I just didn't get my tomato seeds started this year (again), but fortunately, the nurseries carry more heirloom varieties now.

@Pensmaster - I've grown Pineapple before - I seem to remember it doing fine, but only getting a few very large tomatoes form the plant. I LOVED it - one of my favorites, would love to grow it again. Maybe next year if I can find seeds.

Off to go find something else to cross off my to do list...
