Yeah, my little weak one was also dead this morning. It wasn't meant to be. At least he was warm and surrounded by his little friends when he died. One of the things about a big group of chicks like this is that when they're little it's a bit harder to make sure you've watched each one and they are all ok - heck, it's murder just getting a head count!!!

I wish you were a bit closer, and I'd come over and we could learn together - I can butcher chickens but I read a lot about ducks (thinking I could take you up on that), and got very intimidated. I'm just so behind on housing for all these chicks, I don't think I can drive down right now.

Maybe you could come up here with one or some of them/all of them if you can't get your husband to do it with you? I have a cone and scalder, a holding pen, and a fish-cleaning table on which to clean them. And I can do as much of it as you want if you just want to watch at first (not that I know what I'm doing). I could get some ice and if you brought a good cooler, you could make it home with them. It'd likely be an all day affair (it takes a lot longer than you'd think), but we could totally do it. Whaddaya think?


That's it for me - I can spend hours taking care of what could be considered some pretty gross chores, and I find it relaxing. It's very different than my work life, which is mentally taxing and stressful, so it really does help me unwind.
I'm with Dax - I never minded laundry. Dishes, on the other hand, are evil.

I could do that next week. I can put the ducks/chickens in a crate and bring them up. I'd just have to get a cooler. I'll run the idea by my husband and see what he says.

I need help. I had 42 eggs in the incubator and 6 have hatched on what I think was day 19-20 yesterday was day 21. There aren't anymore pips and I haven't seen the other eggs move or heard chirping....I know at least one of the eggs in there had a moving chick in it on day 17 when I candled it. What should I do?

What was your temperature? Are they all the same breed? You can candle again, and as a final check you can try a float test.
