EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

:celebrate SQUEEEEEEEE! :celebrate

I just had my first egg hatch. The little chipmunk fuzzy butt started with a pip and pulled a Cartman.......Said "s.... you fellows I'm goin home" only instead of going home it just erupted out of the shell and is happily screaming it's little lungs out. It set for a good 15 minutes with half of the shell on it's back so I've named it Tortuga, the turtle, Tori for short.

I have a lot more pips waiting in the wings. This is so exciting! Safe to say I'm hooked!

:yesss:

:yuckyuck  'S

Yeah, I just told my husband that just watch. As soon as the last egg hatches one of those useless hens in the coop will go broody on me.

:lau Probably all of them!

So here is little Turtle, Tortuga, AKA Tori. The second egg from the right, next to the one that is being used as a pillow is in full zip at the moment. Our cats finally caught on to what is going on and have been banished to the upstairs for a few days. Happy? I sure am. They aren't too tickled at the moment but then it sux being a cat sometimes, LOL.
Tortuga? As in Wild krats?

Quote: when I used to use one, I left it in for the duration. but I bought a pack of them off ebay real cheap I dont use them anymore, I think I only used them in the styro bators

Today someone delivered 52 eggs for me to hatch for them.

They are weird asian birds - O' Shamo and the like.

Guess they will go into the bator tonight.

how sweet!!! I am so jelly!!!

Been a long time since I been here. Been way to busy to chat. I butchered last weekend. I still have the quail, added some turkeys, 7 beef cows and currently about 40 chickens, just finished some custom hatching and filled the incubator with my own chicken eggs. Of course the only reason I stop by is because I need something. There seems to be a high demand in my area for flock testers. Does anyone know what I have to do to become one? Hoping it is less than a Ph.D. In veterinary medicine.

responded to your PM. I need to know what state. Glad to see you back, liability is on you in PA. We can discuss when you have time. If not in PA you need to call your STATE ag center and ask about how to become one, A lot of states only let Licensed Vets of the state do this. because there is no funding for outside training for poultry etc. But you must check.

Quote: I always have above 70 humidity after lockdown, only time I dont is

1. I forget to up it
2. air cells were too small and last attempt to correct, and even then when drawdown occurs its up 72-75 and higher.

I cringe when I read some people hatch at 60-65% but whatever dries out the boat, ummmm mean floats the boat have at it. Some people dont realize their hygros are that off and are running much higher than expected too. but again each has their own thing that works.

Morning all.

I woke up this morning to two external pips and a lot of cheeping going on. I was up at 2AM and heard my first soft peeps.

The humidity is holding this morning at 67%. I'm hoping it will nudge up a bit if and when one of the two that are pipped, zip for me.

Now the waiting for a zip beings.

As for the cloud of flies. BIG bug zapper.

The only problem, I'd never be able to set all their eggs. Hmmmmm

Today's eggs.
sweet!!

Also - Dumb question, but my cat, who's always been notoriously chunky, has lost a ton of weight in the last 3 months. He seems okay, but should I take him in and get some blood work done, to make sure he's okay?

He's double digits this year, so I know he's getting up there in age.
I would say labs are in order then. I doubt if you can get urine from him to take in, take a stool sample in as well.

Quote: awwwww glad it was just that then. I text you back BTW sorry long nap this afternoon

Lost a keet

looks like they all went to the cooler side last night and then instead of going back to the light when they got cold they just piled in a corner.

how about crele orphs lol

I just missed you yesterday, was in a bit of pain, did too much I guess, I thought I would love to jump out of my own skin for some reason, was horrible.  I guess I relied on pain meds too much eh>?

Sorry sunshine :hugs

Picked up a cooler from a friend today. Coolerbator here I come!!

Nah, Tortuga as in I've got this shell stuck on my back and I look like a silly turtle, Tortuga, LOL

My Brinsea is quickly running out of space. Third chick is zipping and I think there is another in the wing. These guys are going from pip to zip in less than 8 hours and once they get going they are out of there.

When can I chance tipping the canopy enough to pull some empties out? Humidity is running almost 90 with the hatches. I had to open a vent as it was going higher. I'd really like to make space as soon as possible.

I try to stay away from them, but when you need 'em, you need 'em. Hopefully, you don't need them at all soon. How'd Harmony do in school today?
