EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I just picked up the S&G NN chicks from the post office. They had a rough ride - left Idaho on Tuesday, and arrived at the post office this morning. There was Grogel in the box, and they were snug for warmth, but one didn't make the trip, and a few look a bit rough (and I wonder if they will survive). Others look mostly ok, but all were chilled. I was in such a rush to get each one a sip of water and then into the warmth under the MHP, I didn't even count them (there were supposed to be 25, seemed about right). They are now quietly warming up, and the occasional strong one is popping out already for more water and some food. I also turned up the heat in the house they are in to help a bit.

Here they are warming up (with a few trolling around for feed):

and congrats.

Picked these up to test for hot spots in the new bator. Initially I'm impressed with how close they are aside from the one with the humidity being off by 5%. It should at least be good enough to ensure adequate circulation correct?? And yes that's inside a 4 season sun room that is apparently not very well insulated.
Interesting, one would be off like that.

You ever feel like an oddball? I don't have many friends who get my "farm" life.... i feel weird, the big family, the farm life, the old fashioned lifestyle...

I have "casual friends" that I make playdates for, with the kids, but that's the extent of it. If we both didn't have kids, we wouldn't be friends, you know?

I miss my best friend back home. She was actually "my" friend. LOL
No, family pretty much except the life style I have chosen. Of course, they would expect me to want to live away from people and keep to myself. lol

Good morning everybody

Hi Mel!

Yes, I finally gave my girl 8 eggs to sit on. I went to our Amish neighbor's farm and horse traded a dozen of my eggs for cooking for 6 hatching eggs. He gave me 7 and when he saw my Welsummer eggs his eyes popped. He wound up asking for some to hatch out so I came home and separated the boys so hopefully, the Welsummer and Welsummer/Speckled Sussex cross roosters will get busy and give me some fertile Welsummer eggs by next week.

I found one bantam egg under my hen so I left it and swapped out the fake eggs with real ones. She was very good about me doing that but watched really carefully as I removed one and stuffed two under her.

Here she is, in all her prehistoric glory. The appearance is really deceptive. While my other Welsummer hens can be a bit stand offish, she is really a sweet and friendly hen. I'm wondering if that is because she was broody raised and not brooded in the house like her mother was.

If her appearance is any indication, she is going to be a fierce momma.

Dolly is wearing a hen apron. I think it gives her a nice motherly appearance, LOL!!

Congratulations everyone on the new baby goats. They make me want a couple-4-5-6. It's kinda like chicken math isn't it?

You should get goats.

I find that to be a really loving and caring gesture.

Hi Banti!

@mlm Mike I tried the peroxide twice yesterday. It is less stinky, but not right yet. I will try something else if it still smells tonight.

How close are the other two of yours that are due?
I hope he keeps improving.

One I saw plug coming out yesterday morning and in the evening, SO she is close, due date is tomorrow.

The other one due date was 3/1 (145 gestation period for Nigerian Dwarfs). This is her 6th kidding and she usually kids on day 148 which would be tomorrow.

Pretty.

Just had our 49th anniversary on Tuesday. I've found what works best for me is to mention something, then shut the heck up and let him mull it over for a bit. Then, when he looks at me and says, "You know, I had an idea....why don't we <insert name of thing I suggested two weeks ago here>? I'll be we could do that." I just look right at him with adoration, bat my eyes, and say in my best southern accent, "Oh, honey....you're so clever!!"
Sounds like you are the clever one!

Yeah, they are all piled up against the edges of the MHP sleeping (except one loud mouth girl), they definitely got chilled (their little feet were so cold to the touch when I was removing them from the box). I'm worried about them, but am leaving them alone - they are quiet and not complaining, so they are warm enough now, and are probably catching up on some rest after all that travel. Me bugging them isn't going to help any. But I am going to see if I can lower that MHP without disturbing them too much.
