@mlm Mike STOLE YOUR IMAGE you just sent to me muwahhahha!!!

These are some of the Marans and a PEPPER boy Mike hatched, looks like he is still having some growing to do. he should be of nice eating size. @daxigait

The marans were from speckles, the Maran that lays the spotted egg

not sure why but this image makes them darker than I remember

unless these were early laying since they lighten as the keep laying in the year until molt. idk but those are her eggs and thems the chicks. I am starting to think I may like them better than the new stock with the darker eggs! So do I go with SOP or darker eggs????

No idea how you survive in an area hot enough to kill mint.

It gets hot where I live, but mint is one of those things you don't grow here unless you want it to replace every other plant in the yard.

Anyone follow 50 ducks in a hot tub on youtube?

I do, but I haven't been keeping up. I stopped watching around the time Ducky Girl passed away.

OK, so I fell asleep for a bit before starting chicken chores. And I had horrific dreams about really weird stuff including a bunch of dead baby ducks. I woke up, shook it off, and headed outside to find Trinity wandering around outside of the paddock - she's my black NN hen and has not ever been outside the paddock except under duress (last time, a pair of foxes was after the flock). I caught her and cuddled for a bit - I think Snape, their rooster, is being none to polite with them today, and that may be why. So I put her up and went into the other ouse to deal with the chicks, and I walked in to see the door to the Aloha NN brooder OPEN! There were about 15 chicks (4 weeks old, but small) huddled on the floor under the brooder table. And there was poop splattered ALL OVER the (thankfully tile) floor. I must not have latched the door properly this morning.

So I, in shorts, proceed to slip and slide and kneel in the poop on hands and knees to catch all the chicks, in some cases having to chase them around an empty house and back into the kitchen (picture me with chick poop ground into my knees and elbows at this point, and on my thighs and butt from slipping and falling on poop). The whole time I was thinking that this would be really funny if it didn't really suck...

Taking a break (after wiping off the worst of the poop, washing up a little, and collecting eggs). Lumber work for a while this evening, then BATH AND SHOWER TIME. BOTH. Ewwwwwww.....

Crazy chickens.

33. Less than I usually set. BTW, I have a 26 year old over here having a coniption fit because he wants me to get Brahmas.

He's never actually asked me to get a specific breed until now. Know where I can get some eggs?

I can't tell if it pipped on the pointed end, or the round end, but as long as it has an opening to get oxygen, I wouldn't worry about it unless it goes much past 24 hours. If you feel the need to assist at that time, remove the egg quickly so you don't lose too much moisture in the incubator. Place the egg in a warm, moist towel and dampen the membrane a tiny bit. A drop of water on a Q-tip works very well. You moisten the membrane so it becomes transparent, and you can avoid injuring the chick. Remove just a small section of shell from around the opening, and make a small tear in the membrane. Put it back in the incubator for a few hours to see if it can make it out on it's own. If it doesn't you can repeat the process and remove a bit more shell. It's best not to remove all the shell, because it may not have absorbed all of it's yolk. Chicks that make it out on their own tend to be much healthier and happier.
