Body wound is from being coiled. I thought it was a moccasin and assumed the chick was a goner. Otherwise I might have been more careful. Chick had a little speck of blood, nothing else.

Looks like a banded watersnake.

What did you end up planting for the chickens?

I planted field peas, alfalfa, white Dutch clover, timothy, 7top turnips and just today I checked the long range forecast so I planted some buckwheat.

Nice fish by the way. Would be very nice to be able to fish in your backyard. It's been 50 years since I had that ability.
In LA they're likely spawning now. When you pull a big fish like that off of a nest, the scavengers move in to eat the unprotected eggs.
I guess there's no season for largemouth in Louisiana. Up here, you can't fish during spawning season.

I don't mind snakes in general, and we relocated one recently. I thought it was a moccasin when I shot it. Glad it wasn't.

ugh I deleted the email that said I was tagged by Jess thought I would run into it if I read from my last post but didnt !! weird!

From your eggs, I got 2 olive eggers (but lost one this morning), 1 crele orpington, 1 marans, and 1 serama. I didn't even know there was a chance for silkied or fizzled! I can't tell yet but I'll let you know. I picked up a couple bantam gold laced sebright chicks at TSC the other day so she'll have some chicks her own size with her lol
