EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

So, long day, lots of my weekly chicken chores, and at about 8:15 (as I was trying to finish and losing the light), I hit the wall. No lumber or building work tonight - I just totally ran out of gas. Which is bad - I really need to move those chicks outside.

BTW, I ran into my next door neighbor (also a doctor) - told her that I had heard her new rooster - she was excited, just got him this week, and she was gushing about how gorgeous he was. He's been "chatting" back and forth with my boys across the fence. She was saying how she had rebuilt and enlarged the coop (had lost all her previous chickens in a fox massacre a few years ago). I asked her how many chickens she had, and she said "12, no wait, maybe 15... I'm not sure. But now they have babies, so there are those, too..." A good sign in a neighbor!

I'm going to need to take some time next week (maybe some half days) to "Get Er Done!!!!" and get all this building finished. Sooooooo tired....

The work is because I've drastically increased the number of chickens and they don't have enough housing. That and gardening/yardwork year round. I'm sure there's not much to do when your yard is a glacier for 9 months out of the year...

Kristin, take a chill pill, girl! You're going to work yourself to a breakdown. Chooks will be fine for 24 more hours cramped a bit while you sleep.

Oh, goosey, it doesn't get THAT cold here. The wicked cold mostly comes at night so you can still get plenty done during the day as long as you bundle up. :plbb

There's actually some green grass poking its head up already in the snowless spots. I'm sure it'll go kaput with the next hard frost, but oh is it lovely to see... So there, my yard is a glacier for much less than 9 months of the year.

Yes, yes, but one of the S&G Naked Neck girls had a giant gash with hanging flap of skin on the back of her head/neck when I was changing water this evening. I had an open brooder and so I did an emergency separation of boys and girls, but they are all starting to pick at each other because they are in tight quarters - they really must get outside. So it has me anxious. (This was ALWAYS going to be the case, though, when I signed up for this many chicks this year).

Wish all of us here could take a day off work and come help. You'd be done in record time.
