EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

@Fire Ant Farm we were talking about NNs because I was getting some local. She ended up only having one extra, so I got two more cochins and another RIR to go with it. Now Cinder is a happy mama!

Let me look for the post.

Not sure how to link the post itself, but it's #42492
Oh, just some NN bashing I see. Fools...

FYI - my pig taught my silkies to cool off in the wading pool - so I saw 3 of my roosters "dust bathing" in the pool. It was pretty funny.
Your animals are so hysterical!!!

Maybe - I spent about 2 years and wasted a lot of money trying to get PVC to bend for garden stuff. Got a black eye. This is tons easier.

Conduit benders sold by Amazon for substantially less than $45, Prime eligible.
Yeah - I got mine locally a while ago (before I was Prime).

Sent you a PM. When I bought them they were a PDF.

@Fire Ant Farm

wondering how large those coops are dimension wise and what size tarps do you have to purchase to fit them?
Coops are 5'7" x 10', approx. 60sf - and I get more space by having the roost platform (additional 6x3 = 18sf). I've found the limitation is related to how high your roosts are/how many can sit on those roosts under the sloping roof - by having the conduits bolted higher up, there's more space for more. I use a 10x12 tarp - doesn't come all the way down on both sides (I have an egg door on one side). Speaking of which, I need to get some more tarps...

I hope you enjoy her. It beats wasting your life working a job that ultimately doesn't matter.

Agree, but it's a bit addictive/dangerous. (I've got an angle grinder on it's way - to be fair, I've needed an angle grinder for a while, but ripped one to many shirts this week on hanging ends and hurt my wrists using the tin snips on the HW cloth yesterday, and got fed up.)

When did you come and get a photo of my front porch?!?!

At a work meeting (self funded) in Hawaii (sad face) and just saw this from the bus - chickens in a school yard/loose in front of a school.
Not sure what natural predators they have here

Yeah, I was amazed at the chickens on Kauai - I've got a video of them somewhere... Hope you're having a nice trip!

OK, I thought you were trying to get NN. They are kind of growing on me.

Plans - Stress free tractor plans. Here's the link: https://farmmarketingsolutions.com/stress-free-chicken-tractor-plans/ If you decide to buy the plans (not that expensive, and he's supporting his young family in part from these), I can PM you details of my modifications - most importantly, I created an elevated platform in the back with roosts, which increases floor space, allows additional shade/protection, and since there's no ladder, they just jump/fly up, an added level of protection from flood or nighttime predators (found a family of raccoons in the GNH coop one night when the automatic door malfunctioned - got there early enough that the chickens were safe above, and the raccoons were in the food below). (Also, there's an error in the cut list, though I bought my version of the plans a while ago, so he might have fixed it.) I also attached the conduit higher up, which makes it easier to walk inside (done' like the plans, I have to duck and I'm 5'6"). The lap joints are a pain, but are really important - they allow the frame to flex over uneven ground and still stay in contact with the ground. I have made another modification now, adding additional uprights to allow the tractor to be disassemble into panels (plus top) - not easily, but possible. I have 3 in use as permanent "coops", 2 with growouts in them, and 4 more in production now.
Kristin, I am sure you asked this before but what are the uprights? and did you bend them?

Hey now! I wanted you to set them straight. I like the one little one I've got.

Despite the rotten start, pretty decent day. In the morning was teaching in our largest classroom (set up for small group work) - it has the very best view on campus, always makes me smile.

Then additional work, some one on one teaching in the afternoon, then home. I promptly crashed ("just closing my eyes for a minute") - several hours later, I woke up and realized that no building work is getting done today (my hands/wrists are still swollen, so that's probably for the best). I'll just need to do more tomorrow. I'm going to try to go to bed early and get some catch-up sleep tonight. I know I'm getting old now - I was invited to a big party tonight (for Fiesta) with good friends and adult beverages, but sleep is vastly more appealing.

Went out to collect eggs at dusk, caught that little baby possum mid-stride int eh center of the coop floor. It had that look on it's face like, "busted" (and I'm sure it remembers that I'm the one that gave it its unpleasant ride through the air yesterday. Skipped the photojournalism this time and just donned the orange gloves, grabbed it by the tail, put it in a paper sack, put paper sack inside an old potting soil bag, and sorta kinda dropped a big 20 pound stone on the top of it. Repeatedly. (I think it was the same one - I will keep watching in case it wasn't.) (Sorry Kajira)

Oops, however did that happen?
Not funny, give 'em back :rant I did actually end up finding a pack, got legbands on 'lorps replaced. They hate me for it, but hey, I got them off w/o doing a leg amputation too.
