EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I just had a broody hen who has just finished hatching out her eggs she had 17 eggs under her that she had collected and 12 hatched, 11 were healthy, 1 was squished to the bottom of the nest and 1 was half hatched but squished in it shell. Is this normal for them to be squished or is it something else. She no longer has them because when she left the nest she did not care where they were she was walking other them and I was worried that she would squish more. I believe she squished the 1 when she stood up. Was she a bad mum or should i not let broody hens hatch out her own eggs or do i let her hatch her eggs out and take them of her. If anybody could help that would be great. (It was a silver sussex mum if that changes any thing)

I can't understand the question, if she doesn't care for a chicks they will die, so no question here.
If you have an incubator and you kmow how to hatch and yoh want higher (statistically! ) hatch percentage don't let her hatch.
If you don't have the time and effort invested in raising chicks let her hatch.
The answer is dependent on YOU and in what YOU WANT!

Yes it can happen. IMO 17 is a lot of eggs for a broody hen to hatch, there is only so much room under her.

That is too many. Rehome a few (6) chicks, and let her be a mother.
