The cord is how wood is bought and sold here.
Generally it is 4x8 ft and 4 ft high. It has to be stacked so there is minimum amount of air space.

We are talking fire wood, saw logs or pulp wood. There is a lot of "horse trading" involved in wood sales. When selling I think I am too good at stacking and need more air holes, When buying I know he could have stacked better..

The best part is most people just look at a pile of unstacked wood and say that's X number of cords.

And what if there is a dispute? They bring a 3rd guy that say by looking, who is right ? And from where this word came from?
You injur your spinal CORD trying lifting this amount of wood?

What snake, when it's young, has red/tan stripes? Same overall pattern as a coral snake, but different colors

I am afraid we are much too stubborn to copy our wayward southern neighbours. We used to use Fahrenheit and all that mumbo jumbo, but we have seen the light! We are an improved people for it and we will succeed in converting you one of these decades.

Most guys who handle firewood for a living pretty much know what a cord of wood looks like on their particular truck or trailer.

Don't know about injuring your spinal cord, but you can sure do a number on a toe if you drop a chunk on it.
