EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

You better get crackin'!:lau
The big house is yielding 60 eggs a day. Now that I only run a single bator, that's 2 dz a day from the breeding houses as well. Egg sales dropped right smack with Irma. Only averaging 4 dz a day with sales. Stuck a sign by the road (which I hate) but $ is needed bad right now.
Really concidering manufacturing chicken tractors with 3 to 4 chickens included. After seeing the tag on that house yesterday...

I'd love to get $3 a bird....
Rural King sells their chicks for $3 with a min of 6 all day long. Those are a week old maybe?
Our chick sales fell off the map when they opened. Now nothing but calls for adults.

I should have told that dude earlier that offered 3 bucks each to go to Rural Kind and knock him self out..

Lets see.. I can feed big bucks to my stock for 4 months and sell them for the price of a week old chick at a retail store? WHERE DO I SIGN UP??

When petsmart came to town I could no longer sell my Discus to the local fish stores as they went out of business. Petsmart does not buy from the little guys.

I guy just responded to our classified ad for our chickens. We have them listed for $10 each for the 4 month old ones and we have around 60 of them. He asked if he bought all 60 could we take $3 each?
No wonder DH gets huffy/puffy.
60 birds eat $25+ a week (min). /16 weeks X $25= $400.
60 birds X $3 = $90
Resulting in the loss of $310.
Not including time and effort, health care, heat lamps.
Just like Hub says.. we have 6 freezers and 4 BBQ grills.
The proceeds from those sales help with the other age birds as well. There are 30 under lamps right now and about 50 in the barn too. $ breeding houses that need feed for around 30 birds. My big egg house has 70+ birds eating up feed.
$3 dollars a bird is an insult. AND to say "you have my number if you change your mind", just sweetens the deal..

Why I hate Craigslist and am not selling chicks next year on it,

I bet the brinsea brooder plate is easy for you to get in Oz land. Here we can get one from Premier1

https://www.premier1supplies.com/p/...cY-b_jgSwEJ9JiBI3pwDLMiGsu1k6eRUaAll7EALw_wcB

The price is less than for the brinsea and it is better made. I am fairly sure it comes from somewhere in Europe. You might be able to find one made for a company where you are.

You can get up to 20 or so chicks under one of the small ones. They do not break as easily as a bulb and there is very little fire danger. There is a smaller energy use to so if electricity is expensive for you they will pay for themselves

I have found somewhere I can get them here in Oz, but they are a fair bit pricier than a bulb BUT look better. Thanks!

Finally caught up on the thread. Another chick hatched overnight with two more unzipping this morning. Looks like the two that were unzipping yesterday have died, made no progress overnight and they aren't moving or cheeping. So 12 successfully hatched so far, woohoo!
