EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Below: Simple home-made egg turner. Just roll & go! I turn eggs 3xs per day.

*If shipped eggs still have detached air cells after resting, I skip turning for the first 1-2 days.

My family teases me, but I also make little "chick jails" out of strawberry containers. I cut out top & bottoms for air flow. This way I can know exactly which chick came from which hen. Chicks move around A LOT when hatching.
Very nice!! I have trays I have the eggs in while they're incubating and I have another to fit one top to corral them before they hatch, same as you...lol. But mine are solid and I can't see what's happening. Darn.:D
Would the foam kind work better or is it because of the diff in height (top is closer to the light bulb.)?

My first few tries I used a plastic tray see-saw. I had too much of a temp swing. (Higher side higher was higher temp than the lower side.)

BTW- My incubator is a home-made cooler-bater. I just preferred to turn it sideways so I could have a better view. Being sideways may also help keep the heat in when I need to turn eggs.

That's interesting having it on its side! :clap

Great ideas! I used to use cardboard egg cartons for turning, but then the fine people here said it would cause uneven egg temp and early death, so I quit using them just in case. :idunno

Congratulations!
I'd agree with Faraday's thought. I like the foam cartons for everything else because a person can wash them. I would think they'd work well in an incubator. I think I've seen it said about the card board cartons. Just my own thinking...I would be concerned with "stuff" growing in the cardboard.

If I buy hatching eggs. Those cartons they come in don't even get to touch anything in my house. They're set on plastic, tossed and burned asap.

I also won't use them in the fridge on a continual basis. I bought brand new ones for selling eggs to people. Eggs can go in the brand new ones in the fridge or in the washed foam. I place the eggs into peoples own cartons to send back to them if they send me their cartons back. But their cartons never go in my fridge. :p

I have a 1m stack of egg cartons in my closet that I use for holding my eggs. They're from stores and people I know. Germy, maybe, but no way am I paying 20c a carton for new ones!!

I'll ignore it like I do the others. :D

$.20! I wish! They must be more, aren't they? I didn't have any cartons when I started. I had to buy some. On sale, here they are $.25. Now I have stacks of used cartons, each family has their own bag...lol.
