I'm sorry...but I have to side with what Banty has conveyed below. You have that backwards...I am saint for staying with her all these years..
I wish they'd take their bins of 1.50 chicks back to the south where they belong. Bad feed store! Bad!![]()
Thanks! That's a good idea, I typically only start to hatch when it's warming up [may] and by then the feed store gets chooks in. I'll try setting some earlier.Although it's true that many people will buy those cheap chicks in spring, I found that there are still ways to sell chicks. Hatch early BEFORE the stores have their "chick days." (Don't bother hatching April - June, or hatch them to grow out & sell later. There's no way to compete even when you have better quality.) Hatch a few in mid summer & fall. That's when people find out some of their spring pullets are actually roos and want to buy replacements. Also, people may want to get fall chicks for spring layers. In our area, bulk chick bins are only seen in April. The cost + shipping for 3-5 hatchery chicks is high, so often friends of my past customers contact me asking if I have a couple pullets. In fact most of the people who buy my chicks are repeat customers. When they compare my big, pretty orps next to their hatchery chicks, it's an easy decision that mine become the favorites. My orps have the beauty & personality - but not the egg production. I can't blame them for wanting more than one breed.
Drawbacks: It's slow to sell chicks 2-4 at a time. Most want a selection of breeds. I only breed orpingtons, so if I hatch another breed it's always from some one else's eggs. (For which I have to pay) I can only sell straight run or grow some out & charge more for females. I give away the very young males or process them as soon as they're big enough.
Actually... it is a master plan. A sales promotion. Those stores know what their birds are worth....The problem is most buyers do not.
Were the eggs they hatched from shipped?Actually... it is a master plan. A sales promotion.
They sell feed & everything you need to raise Backyard chickens. How can you sell more feed and chicken related items if not everyone has chickens? I have an Idea! (says the RK Marketing dept) "If we sell chicks at a super low price, impulsive shoppers will swoop them up and we will have a ton of new chicken owners entering the picture". GUESS WHAT???? All those new chicken owners need waterers, meds, feed, pans, tractors.. on and on and on and on... Now the newbies let their chicks die and have all this chicken related items laying around. If you first don't succeed, try try again.. "Hey! I learned from my mistakes and not going to let them die this time!" HONEY! what dear? CAN YOU STOP BY RK ON YOUR WAY HOME TONITE AND BUY SOME FEED? WE ARE LOW..yes dear..
I am wetting a dry chick to remove the turtle shell right now. The last 4 had an Elmers Glue thingy going on. Two of them are micro tiny from micro tiny eggs produced from a very young new mother. So small.. so cute. They look like duckies.
Here is turtle going under the clean process.
