My chicks are getting big. I’m torn about the next step. I think they are fine going outside, but the rapid ups and downs have me concerned. Thirty degree drops overnight seem too severe for 3-week-olds. I actually worry about the adults.

I have mine without heat plate in barn. No where near ready for outside yet. There was actually frost on the windshield this morning.

I discovered two years ago that the chicks don’t need heat if they are with others. I don’t rely on the past experiences though. I will always check repeatedly for a problem adjusting.

Yeah and my broody hen had them out in much colder weather than I would have done.

Most have Black legs and bodies, lol. I will see what I can do. I think I have some velcro strips here too. That may work temporarily.



That makes sense. I realized about halfway through the incubation, that the temp was still lowered from the last lockdown. MY incubator is the GQF Genesis, so it is a good one, but it can't fix user errors.

I did! Especially when it is considered that they were shipped, had wonky air cells, and the temps were lower than ideal!

I'm certainly no expert, but I wouldn't do it with puppies; can't see chickens being much different.

Consider that a wild hen has to leave her babies to get food and water herself. The chicks need to come out for water.
