Anybody out there still hatch under a broody anymore? :pop I stuck 6 potentially fertile eggs under a broody a few weeks ago & I'm having trouble finding info on what to do if they accually hatch. So far everything I've found is incubator related or dealing with assisting. Does anybody know of a broody 101 link???

Our breeds really don't go broody. Or at least the few who do, will brood at the wrong time. Last season I had a free ranger disappear. 3 weeks later she reappeared with 5 of the smelly-est-rankest-gag me scented beautiful chicks just following her around.
Were not really set up foe El-natural hatching. I use to place a few eggs under some dormant hens but too much to monitor for such a low end yield.
Good luck there Roomy

Thanks! That's funny about the stinky babies! :lau I wonder where she took them?

These are 6 (possibly fertile) eggs that we bought as a curtesy from an old lady who was kind enough to adopt one of our roos last year. We have a broody CCL & just for fun stuck them under her to see what would happen. We candled them at about a week, but the shells are really dark & we could only see into one of them. It didn't look to promising, but we left them under her just in case. I just looked at the calendar & noticed Monday is day 21. :barnie I'm scrambling thru threads but it seems broody hatching is going the way of the dinosaur.

the stinky babies
I asume eggs in her nest that were not fertile or quitters, exploded and covered them with rotten eggs. The hen is total free range and I brought the chicks to an indoor brooder for safety. The smelled up the hatch room. It was so bad for about 4-5 days. :sick

What is it you’re worried about? She does all the work. She will protect them. Be sure they can reach some water and chick feed. All Flock is good enough for adults and babies.

My babies were due Monday, but none developed.

I WORRY!!! :lau

Mine probably aren't developed either, but just in case....

Yes THIS Monday. :barnie I've been pretty casual about it because I doubt they'll hatch, but now I'm a little panicked. I'm worried that they wont hatch... I'm worried that they will hatch... I'm worried that if they hatch they'll all be boys & we'll have to rehome them & break the kids hearts all over again. I'm sad that if they do hatch, we wont get to see it... The one time we hatched in the bator was THE single most exciting moment of my life.
