EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hey, You.
Whatcha been up to? Drifted in yet? Pushing 70f here; muddy mess. At least I was finally able to change the bedding in one coop. Need another bale before I can do the other one.

Same ol' rat race as usual. I'm down to 16 chickens, or maybe 19... I forget if I counted in my newest trio. That doesn't count ducks or quail, but still! I haven't gotten that low in years. I get to load up on birds next spring in a big way. I can't wait.

It is most definitely not 70*F here, but the snow has gone down a bit from before, when we had almost 2'. The coop and goat shed both need to be cleaned, but they're frozen, so I dump new shavings on the top instead.

My shavings had been there long enough that they'd turned to dust. I took it all the way to the vinyl floor, then dumped an entire bale in there; usually only takes half of that. They shouldn't get cold anytime soon.

You have a penguin rooster:D

I'd have a real penguin too, if only the rule-makers weren't such party poopers.

View attachment 1621791 His name is Flash. He's one of my newer birds.
He doesn't even look like the same bird from that angle. I take it he still has some filling out to do? Looks like he's all tail, wings, & crow right now
What breed is he?

Yep. He was hatched some time this spring... he should be at full size in a few more months. He's a full OEGB, but a cross between brown red and SDW. He's a spunky little guy, but goodhearted. He'll make a fine addition to my spring breeding pens.

He's a real looker, for sure. I hope his personality doesn't change when he has hens of his own.

I don't keep them separated long enough for that to be an issue---the roosters have to spend all winter together every year, so I try my best to make sure they don't have any reason to become unfamiliar with each other. I put the males in the pens for a few days a week and keep the hens locked up full time. Seems to work.
