EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I looked them up. The one place I found any information was not satisfactory.
On BYC, we know some people that gruffly say, “keep your hands off the incubator from day one until all eggs are hatched! “ and there are people that sweetly tell you to candle daily. Ditto with the other sites for hermit crabs.
A woman on a crab site I’m a member of goes around bullying, and spreading fear. When I read today that she told someone to never pick up a hermit crab, I wanted to hunt her down and smack her! I’d never heard such a thing! The woman discussing Halloween crabs said it too. Of course, she also said that she couldn’t find information on them. I have to wonder how she takes care of her other hermit crabs.

You guys really need to start posting. No one really cares about my hermit crabs!l Okay, aside from that one member. :frow
I do! I do!

All of my experience with hermit crabs comes from my visits to the beach when we go visit husband's parents in Mexico. I love "hunting" them and then screaming when I find one because I am afraid of getting pinched, lol. I always catch at least one and it gets stuck in a plastic cup and carted all around Mexico with us until I convince my kids we need to let it go. One of my favorite things is wandering the mangrove edges and seeing all of the little dotted trails made by them as they go on their midnight wanderings. Eeek! And finding them when they are between shells and are all soft and vulnerable--it always creeps me out the way they seem so lost and desperate. We usually try to find shells and put them in a cup to see if they will take one for a home, but so far it has only happened once.

I had two (or was it one? Idk) crabs in ‘98 when my sister bought them for my 3-y-o nephew. We knew nothing! I was given the task of returning them.
Brian knew everything about nature. He was a man in every way. Unfortunately, he didn’t know enough about hermit crabs either. Each kid (3) had a crab around ‘14. They did better than most, but I know now what went wrong with them.
I believe I’m doing a moderate job. I could do better (I’m actually taking a break from reading and online shopping!), but I at least feel confident in saying I can take a crab from the beach, and it will have a long life. However, I won’t take its freedom away from it. Buying them is different! :lau

Yeah, I’m still awake. Yeah, I am talking about “that” again.
Halloween crabs and Halloween hermit crabs are similar in some ways, but vastly different in one. The one called a hermit crab is an underwater crab. It’s confusing to understand the “why’s”, but that’s what it seems to boil down to.
Cool fact! The land crab digs about five feet down to molt. Other crabs their size only dig 4-6 inches.
