Checking back for some gender ID help with our EE. It is our only one and don't have any to compare. Some reddish color started showing in the wings and shoulders about 2 weeks ago. This is our largest bird. Thaks for the help!

I'm not an expert but I think it's a pullet. The red that would pop up on a cockerel would be more in a block on the shoulders. Also, the comb and wattles don't look overly red or large for 8 weeks.

What a relief! Pepper and Dell, the other bird pictured, were one of two differently shaded chicks in their pullet bins of 30. We were worried in retrospect that choice was a mistake and maybe they both might have been "extras" that hatcheries sometimes add in the colder months.

Thanks. I wasn't quite sure what to look for with the red on the shoulders. I've probably looked at thousands of EE pictures, and was still unsure.
After 15 years of EE ownership, they're still a challenge. But, especially with cockerels the 'red shoulder patch' seems to pop after while. The pea comb EEs are such a great variety to have in your flock- and totally random for color and pattern. Enjoy the blue/green eggs!
