My EE produces droppings a bit like that when she eats too many greens or drinks too much water, albeit generally they're more digested. Could that maybe be it though?

I think at this point, it is unlikely we will ever discover the cause unless we decide to do a necropsy after she passes away. Whatever it is, it’s not contagious and doesn’t seem to affect her overall health visibly. I had hoped that because there are so many members on backyardchickens that someone might have had a similar situation and may have been able to shed some light, but that doesn’t seem to be the case and we have exhausted all the normal avenues with our vet and gut flora treatments we have already tried. I guess she will remain a mystery, lol. This really is strange, I hope you find out what's going on soon![]()
Interestingly, I see my other hens drink more water than she does, I actually don’t see her drink all that often. It’s just strange and nothing we’ve tried seems to make any difference at all. It’s possible that her kidneys don’t function normally. We continue to provide probiotics in their water once a week and give them apple cider vinegar with the mother two times a week as well. Their water is changed frequently and I clean their coop and run daily so they have a very clean environment and I have looked up every plant in our backyard to make sure there is nothing toxic. I guess she is just an oddball chicken. My EE produces droppings a bit like that when she eats too many greens or drinks too much water, albeit generally they're more digested. What a pretty bird. It looks like there's lots of grass in her droppings so maybe it's an allergy or she is just unable to digest it properly? The fact that she looks and acts healthy and is even laying eggs suggests that it isn't a huge problem, at least at this point. I would try altering her diet and see if that helps.View attachment 1254827 View attachment 1254828 View attachment 1254829 View attachment 1254827 We adopted some backyard hens from a client almost 2 years ago. Our EE, Marge, has been a good and consistent layer and looks perfectly healthy, eats and drinks just fine and does not have a poopy or pasty butt. However, she consistently has very liquidy poop. It is early February in Northern Utah and the temperatures are approximately 50° during the day so this phenomenon is not heat related. She has these poops year-round. We feed our hens 16% Layena pellets, They get a good handful of high quality scratch every morning and are not fed scraps. They free range in our urban backyard every day. We have tried Duravet probiotics in their water and also give them ACV. We are completely perplexed by her constant liquid poop, all of the other hens have perfect poop. We did worm her in November and that didn’t seem to do anything at all and there is never any blood in her poop. Is it possible that this is just simply normal for her? We did take a sample to our chicken vet and there were no worms present and no coccidiosis was seen .
Wow! That looks exactly like Marge's poops! Nothing scary looking in them, just barely digested feed and completely unformed, all the proper poop components are present, just in mostly liquid form. Yours may be due to her getting close to laying. My other hens will have a splashy poop every now and then, but mostly in the middle of summer when it's really hot and they're drinking a lot of water and gorging themselves on frozen watermelon. So far, no one has any idea what it could be. Although one member posed the possibility of kidney dysfunction and I suppose that's a real possibility, but she's so happy and healthy it seems like if there were kidney issues they wouldn't live long and wouldn't be as spry as the younger hens and Marge most certainly is so it's a real mystery. My Silkie girl has had very similar poop for about the last 3 weeks. She seems very happy and healthy, albeit she has had a major appetite increase (which I attributed to just starting to lay last week, but I don't know). I'm interested to hear whatever you find out. We did try an 18% layer feed last winter (Feather Fixer), but we had more issues with loose poop and decided to go back to the 16% protein and they've done better....except for Marge, who's poop is always the same no matter what we feed her. What a pretty bird.
