EE question

There are HUGE differences between Ameraucana, Araucana, and EE's! To most, the EE and Ameraucana are similar, but in all truth, they are VERY different.

Ameraucana and Araucana are TRUE BREEDS. (have an APA standard of perferection).

EasterEggers are mutts. This is what you have. They are usually a cross of an ameraucana and some other breed - used for their blue eggs (Keep the blue egg color in the cross because the gene is dominant!) They can be any color and do not have a standard of perfection, nor do they meet either the Ameraucana or Araucana standard. ALL HATCHERIES sell EEs - none sell true ameraucana or aruacanas.

Also, there is no such thing as a "Americana".

Hope this helps you.

OK, I will freely admit to being confused by the spelling of the name, but if Amerucauna is a "real" breed, with breed standard, as I have been told, then how can it be said that NO hatcheries have them. There must surely be a source? My 16 week old Peepers has all of the charachteristics of a true Amerucauna. . . my 17 week old "yellow" is definately a cross, and I am waiting to see what color eggs she lays to see if I can define her as an EE.
I have had eggs from Amerucauna hens (from my local farmers market, and they are blue, rather than the blue / green that most EE's lay, so if Peepers lays blue eggs, I will feel totally confident that she is a true Amerucauna, as I have been told that she is. The reason I asked this question in the first place is to detemine if Peepers is a true Amerucauna, and would thus "breed true" with an Amerucauna roo. Also, of course, I purchased her because I find the "true" blue eggs to be much more beautiful than the E.E. eggs, and just like to be able to share them with friends and family. I guess time will tell. ...

Yes, like i posted earlier. The Hatchery where i got my EE chicks have the 8 Ameraucana roosters, one of each color and they use them with different breed of hens to get their EE chicks. I have pullets that look real close to some of the Ameraucana Roo colors. Some Call them mutts but i have to tell you i would rather have a rainbow of colored eggs than just one color. If i was you i would breed them and see what you get! No matter what, you are going to get beautiful eggs.

The light brown egg is from my SLW. I have 5 EE's and they each lay a different color of egg.

Its quite simple - true bred Ameraucanas are VERY rare. Araucanas even more so - one of the rarest breeds.... Hatcheries simply cant attain enough real ameraucana stock to produce the amount of birds they need. So, they improvise, and sell them as the same thing. They get away with it, because people arent informed about the real breeds - they are so rare. I went to the KY state fair the other weekend. Out of the 20 or so birds entered as "Ameraucana", I only saw about 4 that were REAL ameraucanas. All the others were EEs.

And just because a bird lays real blue eggs, does NOT make them an Ameraucana. I have 5 easter eggers - 1 hatchery bird, 4 farmers market birds. 2 lay green eggs, one lays a light olive egg, and one lays blue - and i mean BLUE - eggs. The 5th has yet to lay.

Some Ameraucanas and Araucanas, that are true bred, lay green eggs - even though they should lay blue.

You can get True Ameraucana hatching eggs sent to you by the dozens. There are several people on BYC that will send you Ameraucana eggs by the dozens. Its just as easy for the Hatcherys to get the Ameraucans. The do have Ameraucana Roos that they use on different breeds of hens to get their EE's.

As you read each members quotes at the bottom of their page you will see alot of true ameraucana owners. Pm them and see how many will send you hatching eggs. I now have 13 different Ameraucana chicken owners that will send me hatching eggs when i am ready for them. And yes i double checked to make sure they were true ameraucana. Do be careful if you are shopping for Ameraucana hatching eggs on ebay or egg bid, make sure they are true ameraucanas.

It is relatively easy to find ameraucana or araucana breeders, but they are spread all over, and the number of breeders at any specific show is usually low.. And then you have folks who have EEs, but call them americanas or anacondas or aricanas or even ameraucanas or araucanas--usually because that is what the hatchery called them.

If the hatchery can come up with true ameraucana roosters, they can come up with true ameraucana hens and sell true ameraucana chicks. Maybe not as many, but they would command a higher price. The reality is that they have no interest in doing so. There is a demand for multi-coloured eggs, and maybe that isn't a bad thing, but that being the case, they need to call the birds what they are, not mislead people.

Hi,

If anyone wants Ameraucanas they can contact the Ameraucana Breeders Club at www.ameraucana.org and get a breeders list. When they have them they will be happy to sell eggs or chicks some may sell started chicks. They sell fast at hatching season.

Bearpaw

I have Black, Blue, White, Buff and Wheaten. As well as a few experiments in genetics.
