I was curious to know if there is a way to give a good guess as to whether or not young chicks are purebred ameraucanas vs. Easter Eggers? Or are there at least things you can look for? I've seen people advertise Ameraucanas and flat out asked VERY specificially if they are true purebred ameraucanas and NOT Easter Eggers and were assured they were purebred. My gut feeling has been that they aren't, but being new to the breed I can't really tell when they are chicks (and probably couldn't reliably tell a good imitation hen either!) I didn't buy them so I don't have pics.

Are there things you can check for to at least give you a good indication of which it is when they are just chicks?

Who you get them from is the biggest indicator, but next to that would be color (both feathers and legs) Of course, you may need to wait a little bit for the proper feathers/color to come through, but you'll notice. The other thing is the breeder - If you get it from a hatchery, . . . Forget it. They never sell Ameraucanas. If you get from a real breeder and not just someone with a couple birds, you've got good chances. If you know the chick's parents, and they have a recognized or project color and with proper leg color - I'd say go for it.

The ABC [ Ameraucana Breeders Club ] website has pics of all the varieties as chicks . One easy clue is that the only variety born with the chipmunk stripes is the Silver .
