Okie dokie.. Not sure my rsl's like chicks but I'd be worried about the australorp because she is the boss and is kinda aggressive towards the bantams (the bantys are sitting on these eggs) and then Red my roo would probaly be fine... but I have this cage thing that would hang off the end of the nest box but allow space for a bantam hen to get out of but not a big one to get in... And I have three mothers for these eggs lol none of them would stop being broody! But if it doesn't go well I supposed I could put mommys and there babies in with the little 10 week old chicks

They hatched!

This morning I went outside and heard ALOT of squawking. I ran into the coop (yeah at full speed

) and discovered a pecked chick. The poor thing wasn't under the moms and it had blood all over it

I picked it up and it was still alive... but it doesn't look like it will make it. I was afraid to set it down in case the moms pecked it again while I checked to see if there were more chicks. So I ran into the house carrying the little chick and got my mom. She came out and held the chick while I looked for more. And under Claire sat one little fluffy, alive chick. When I picked it up I noticed it had featherd feet

I didn't trust those broodies since they were already seemed to be fightning over the chick. So I set up my brooder and put little baby in there. She's downstairs right now. And I'm deciding between the names of Hope and Emily

Anyways here's little baby:

I figured I'd take a picture of her everyday and put them all together into a youtube vid

And should I buy some more chicks so she isn't lonely? Or does it not matter?
Also why do you think they pecked poor baby to death? Were they fighting? Or was he just not gonna make it anyways?

Thanks everyone!

It wasn't the mother who pecked the chick, right?

If it were me, i would put some blue kote on that chick's wound and then put her and the mother and other chick altogether in an isolated location....at least for a few days.

It definitely does matter that the chick is alone - and that the other chick is alone under the mother. They need each other. Chicks/chickens don't do well isolated. The company will also help the injured chick get better. You just have to cover the wound with the blue kote so no one is tempted to peck at it. I have a chick who ended up being the lone survivor of his hatch, so even though he is about 10 weeks old, he's the only one in the flock who is his age, and he has a hard time melding with the flock. It's sad to watch.

Also, while you have that chick in isolation, i would feed her some boiled egg yolk and some vitamin water - you'll probably have to dip her beak in it to help her understand what to do. This will help her recover. Chicks are often very resilient, so don't give up on her yet. If you don't have vitamin water, some sugar water will help - or a touch of gatorade in the water if you have that.

If you really don't feel good about giving the hurt chick back to the mama, then i strongly recommend taking away the other chick also - so that the two chicks can be raised together.

I love that picture! Beautiful babies! Congratulations and good luck!

Oh the injured one died and then I took the alive one away from the moms. I think it was the moms pecking it too. I don't trust those broodies with the chick so I guess I'll make some scrambled eggs and put electrolytes in her water? And look for some friends

Also the one injured one wasn't even dried off yet

It wasn't breathing but every once in awhile it would move..
