Egg #1 - *Update*

I'm still in the waiting stage, and I'm happy for you!! It seems like we wait forever before we get eggs, but it's worth the wait! I have had chickens before but not for years, so I'm like a newby and can't remember when they lay. I guess the breeds are all different. I think I have some sex-links that are just about ready to lay.

Congrats how eggsciting (sorry) for you

Still waiting here too....grumblegrumble....

btw Can you eat a soft shelled egg????

I suppose you could eat it but I opted not too, LOL.

I got egg number 3 today!! It looks like she's laying every other day now. It was in a different nest box but the exact size, color and shape of the last one. Oh yeah, with a nice hard shell too!!

Well my New Hampshire Red has now given me 4 eggs in 4 days. Wasn't that nice of her??

I was walking around the coop area at lunch time when I heard a noise inside. I peeked in the window on the other side and saw that the RIR was in the nest box!!

Oh I can't wait to get home from the office now to see if she did anything!!

How exciting!!

I'm so excited. Our chickens (2 wyandotte, 1 auracana, 1 delaware) are 20 weeks old, and yesterday we found 5 eggs on the floor of the hen house, next to the door.

We put 2 of them in the nesting boxes, as a hint, but this morning, we caught the silver wyandotte in the act of laying another egg in that same spot next to the door. We picked her up to show her the nesting boxes, but she laid the egg as I was moving her!

Any hints on coaxing them to use the nesting boxes?

Well, I checked the nest boxes when I got home this evening and there was nothing there. I searched the coop and the yard also. I guess maybe the RIR is gearing up and checking out the laying areas. Maybe tomorrow will be the day for her.

Hurray!! I went out to the nestbox after church this morning and there were 2 eggs in one of the boxes!!

Looks like the RIR must have started today!!

Just an update...

I've been getting an egg every day now from the New Hampshire and the RIR.

I noticed a few days ago that "Blackie" my Black sex link (my 6 year old came up with that clever name, LOL) was in the nest box. I thought she would lay that day or the day after but she didn't.

Yesterday afternoon I checked the box (again!!) after I had already collected eggs from the other 2 and there was a 3rd egg!! So I "suspect" it was the sex link, however, I really don't know for sure. There are 4 others it could have been but it was likely "Blackie."
