Egg binding EMERGENCY in 1yo Red Star

Hey y'all,

My Red Star hen Peebles is egg bound. I stuck a lubed gloved finger up her vent (carefully), felt no egg, only soft tissue and swelling (??) but this came out when I removed my finger.

What do I do?

She likely has a shell-less egg hung up. Give her one whole calcium tablet. If you have calcium citrate, which works fastest of all types of calcium, give her one directly into her beak. It will go down easily.

Then place her in a crate after blow drying her to prevent hypothermia since she is very stressed with this egg and is very susceptible. Put her on warm towels heated in the dryer. Give her plenty of water to drink at will.

Leave her in a quiet place and check on her frequently. You will be monitoring what comes out of her. If she's losing a lot of fluids, she will be thirsty and will drink lots of water. If an egg comes out with a broken yolk, she will need an oral antibiotic to head off infection. Try to locate one if you can. Tractor Supply may have Fish Mox, amoxicillin. Grab a bottle.

This is the type of calcium I recommend if you're heading to the store to buy it. It will enhance her contractions to push out the egg.

I can only find cal carb at my drugstores. I gave her an entire pill. I'm highly suspecting she has a broken egg. I did the gloved lubed finger again and the oviduct is extremely swollen. I could only feel soft swollen tissue and the like. This came out after I pulled my finger out.

Leaning towards egg white material. She's now keeping her eyes shut. Her sister, another Red Star from the same clutch, was euthanized exactly a month ago for a broken egg and oviduct infection.

I do have a post-surgical and open-wounded family member still, so unfortunately if there are any signs of infection I will have to euthanize as I am not going to give a family member MRSA or something from a chicken.
 
Infection would set in from normal bacteria growing in any broken yolk. it would be contagious only if you didn't wash your hands thoroughly after handling the chicken.

It's so sad and unfortunate that these production breeds have such high odds for reproductive issues. I have two right now, at age two, that are in and out of reproductive crises. I love their temperaments and sweet personalities, but I won't get any more in the future due to this heartbreak.

Got it.

I know, right? Production breeds will break your heart. This is my favorite one, she's only a year old. Today is the one year anniversary of her first egg.

I *do* have 15 doses of Trimeth Sulf from a prolapse in my other, deceased red star.
