Egg bound and prolapse

Geez. The prolapse. My leghorn just had a terrible prolapse that wouln't stay in. I got some vet wrap and stuck a maxi pad to it, then placed the pad over her vent, wrapping the vet wrap around her, under her wings and around. I left it on overnight, and in the morning everything was where it belonged and has stayed there so far. This is the second day since the 'pressure diaper'.
Best of luck to your little girl, I love her spa picture. :)

I hope your girl keeps everything where it belongs. Post a pic of your lady. I love seeing everyones pretty birds. Helps me decide what breeds I want :)

Just a quick update and a question. Laura is doing much better. She puuled the bandaid off herself that night and prolapsed again but this time when I cleaned her up I removed all kinds of nasty that was stuck to the tissue. Poop and who knows what. After I pushed the tissue back in it stayed in place and has not come out since. Yay Laura!
One question, she was bleeding a little because she picked at the exposed tissue and I am worried about infection. I am squeezing a tube of antibiotic ointment into her rear but I think she needs something more than antibiotic cream. Does anyone know what kind of antibiotics I can give her and the dose? I dont know much about them as thus far I have been able to treat successfully without going the antibiotic route. This time I think it is worthwhile as she is our favorite and more of a pet than anything. I try to keep things natural but I would be happy to throw out eggs forever if it keeps her from geting infected.

I'm glad to hear that she is improving

I understand your concern about infection. If you have a vet, he/she can prescribe some antibiotics suitable to help fight infection for a prolapse. Most references/articles I have seen recommend Tetracycline, but this is now prescription only, but your vet may have something even better.

Keep us posted on her progress.

I found one of my guinea hens with prolapse and an egg protruding with the membrane stuck around it. Our guineas free range so we don't always get a close look at them. The prolapse/stuck egg was blocking her up. I gave her a warm bath and the protruding egg finally released but it took a bit of membrane with it. She then proceeded to release two more eggs... Lord, I hope she is ok now. I'm worried that the tear in the membrane will lead to infection (though she seemed to have no issues with laying the two additional eggs). Any recommendations to prevent infection where the tearing occurred?

Thanks for the suggestions. Yoghurt is her favorite and she's interested in food so I should be able to get some in her when she's done with her bath. I'm gonna let her soak a while because she seems to be enjoying it

Sorry your in this situation.
This picture is too darn cute!

@Eggcessive ^^

If the torn membrane was on the outside, I would just use some betadine or Vetericyn on it. Plain neosporin/triple antibiotic ointment will work instead. I wouldn't do anything if it is an internal tear.

I forgot to update on my gal. She did great. It took her several days before the prolaps would stay inside but eventually it did. I pumped her rear full of triple antibiotic ointment and decided to wait on doing any other antibiotics unless her consition got worse. She was back to her old self in a few days and managed to escape her "prison" and pillage the kitchen while I was gone

She is back with the flock and doing good.
@jhomestead I hope your hen is ok. You could do what I did and squeeze antibiotic ointment into her vent (the kind WITHOUT pain reliever). Also, probiotics such as yoghurt seem to really help them heal. Keep her in a dark area to try and prevent her from laying for a while if you can. Didn't seem to stop mine but she went broody right after this so that did the trick. I just made sure she ate and let her dit and heal. Good luck and keep us updated!

Believe it or not my girl is doing much better now too. She took up residence in our bathroom for a while, but I knew things were improving when I found her roosting on the shower curtain on Monday. She is eating well and the prolapse (after numerous repeat prolapses) seems to be doing better now.
