Egg bound Button Quail, may be prolapsing. In distress now.

Gave her some water. Sitting, resting comfortably on a wet paper towel on the backside warmed by small heating pad under cage. Covered except for head in terry cloth hand towel. She is out of distress, but still looks Very sick. I have one of my tame buttons sitting next to her cage.

While watering her (she isn’t accepting food, but it’s in front of her), shot a quick picture and it doesn’t look good at all. (See labeled picture for better details about the injury). She had a normal looking bowel movement on me.

Don’t know how this got to be so bad, unless the others did this to her or she did it to herself trying to get the egg out.

Bottom line, it seems obvious she won’t live, at least not for long. Poor little girl button.

Does she live indoors? If so, she might have a vitamin D deficiency. If she lives through the night, you really should go buy some calcium gluconate at the feed store. You'll find it in the cattle section.

Oh absolutely, there’s a tractor supply not too far away. Yes, they live indoors. I do supplement the water with D3, B complex and E. Been trying to find a grow light as well. I do move the cage to door when sunlight comes thru.
What else do u suggest? I am fairly new to my small flock and know I need more to learn. They do seem happy. The females lay 1 egg dAily and the males mount females in the am and again late afternoon, for the most part.

oh your poor little quail!

I can empathise having had big babies myself, lol.

Can you squirt a load of antibiotic ointment into and over the vent so at least that is helping her heal for now?
Yes, have been doing that. Poor little thing. I am up early and have checked on her and she is still with us. I watered her and she took it well. Won't turn her over until sun up. Don't want to disturb her too much.

I want to thank everyone on this forum for coming in so quick to help me. I come and go here, sometimes on for a few days, then off. This is truly a wonderful and positive place and although our birds can become ill and even die, people here are always there for support and a kind word.

Thank you BackYardChickens for your knowledge, support and immediate attention for my little bird who was in an emergent situation.

How is she doing this morning?
She is still with us. I emailed Garrie Landry with this mornings pictures. Garrie said to get a light over her and keep her separated, along with everything else everyone here suggested to do. I got a good look this morning, the tears are pretty bad. Aside from taking her to the Jacksonville, FL avian specialty clinic, there’s no local vet who can handle this repair. Garrie did say they are amazing birds and if she can heal, she will heal. If she should pull thru this, she won’t ever go back with her flock. At best she can live next to them and my very tame blue faced female can come visit.

I just don’t know what the outcome will be. She did eat and drink (got Ca++ gluconate added to all their water today) and she’s preening. Watching to see if she disturbs the injury. So far so good.

Thank you for asking about her.
