Egg Bound Chicken - How Long to Recover?

Well darn, that’s not great to wake up to. I have a little crop experience but not a great amount. You may find this article helpful:

Is there a smell coming from her mouth? You could start by trying a bit of chopped up chunks of coconut oil and crop massaging to try to get things moving. Mine usually haven’t had any arguments pecking at frozen pieces of coconut oil when Ive offered it. Is she perked up at all?

After coconut oil & a little massaging her comb was flat this morning! She’s definitely perked back up and looks much better. I really appreciate your help!

Hi all, our hen isn’t doing well again. Seems to have the same symptoms as before, very pale comb/face, lethargic, standing most of the day closing her eyes. She has not laid another egg since the soft shell one she passed in early June. With an egg bound chicken it is not likely that she would have survived this long…correct? So I wonder if something else is going on. Gave her calcium, nutra-drench and an epsom salt bath. It has been very humid and mid-80’s the past week but none of the other girls are acting this way.. thanks for any thoughts!

Oh shoot, I’m really sorry to hear that. Well if you’re meaning her being egg bound from June until now, no, that wouldn’t be possible. An egg bound hen will pass within 24-48 hours if the egg is stuck and she hasn’t been able to lay typically; it is somewhat of an emergency situation.

But do you think maybe she has another egg to lay? And perhaps she is egg bound with that egg right now? That wouldn’t be out of the question. It is a little odd she hasn’t laid again since June, so that makes me wonder if she is having reproductive issues. How are her droppings? Any changes in her abdomen? Crop slow? Is she possibly in a molt? Have your other hens ceased laying due to the heat?

How many days have you given extra Calcium this time? You're giving Calcium Citrate+D3 (1 tablet daily) correct?

Possible she's laying internally or has some other reproductive issue. Sometimes when this happens they can improve, then decline, then bounce back again for a while, it's hard to know.

Do offer supportive care, give the Calcium, see that she's drinking well. Offer her normal feed or wet mushy feed. Look her over for lice/mites and see that her crop is emptying overnight.

I agree with @alinas2010 that the hen has expelled a Lash Egg (Salpingitis).

You can try treating with an antibiotic like Amoxicillin to see if that helps with the inflammation and infection.
I'd still give her Calcium Citrate+D3 for a week to see if she can expel any more material.

Thank you! I was looking up salpingitis yesterday and saw some folks mentioning Baytril as a way to help. I ordered some that will arrive next week. I do have amoxicillin on hand. Do you think I should continue with just the amoxicillin?
