Egg bound hen

So is there anything else that resembles egg bound?

I tried to feel for an egg but didn't feel one. How far would your finger go?

What ever her problem is it has been going on for over a week.

First sign was a funny walk. Kind of a waddle. I noticed this start over a week ago. Now her legs are spread about 3x wider than normal when she walks. Plus they are turned in at 45 degree angle. Her whole belly is very firm yet liquidy feeling. Very extended an bloated looking. Now she also has a droopy tail. Her vent is bulging looking but not prolapse. But looks like it will prolapse. She is pooping and eating and drinking. I watched her last night and and she can not make it up to the 20 inch high perch.

Thanks

When I have felt for an egg, it goes in about 1-2 inches just until you meet resistance. Of course do it gently since a soft shell egg could break inside. But if she has been like this for a week, with the symptoms you just described, she may have internal laying or egg yolk peritonitis. With a bulging vent, she sounds as if she also has ascites or fluid in the belly or peritoneum. This can be drained periodically with insertion of an 18 gauge needle and letting the fluid drip out. Other than giving some antibiotics to fight infection and peritonitis, there is not much that can be done to hens with EYP, and many are put down Here are some links for you for help in draining her and EYP:

Well she is still alive. She has been very slowly improving. She still can't perch with the others. I will just let it ride and see how it goes?

On a side note one of the other hens went missing Monday afternoon. I looked and looked all over. But never found an sign. I figured a hawk flew off with her? So today at 3 a hen was on a metal canoe leaning against the wall. So I went to shue her off of it. Low and behold directly below where she was jammed down inside the wall. So for 2 days she was trapped down in a wall joist. 6"x16" slot. No easy task to get her out. Poor thing literally sat at the water for 10 minutes that I watched. Drinking ever 5-10 seconds. I think she will be fine. And the bad news. A rooster is going down tomorrow. 2 is too many for 7 hens.
