We have a couple of brand new layers and we have one in particular we are a bit concerned about. She has laid 6 eggs since last Monday. We noticed that Monday morning she spent about 2 hours in the nest boxes, but did not produce an egg. No other symptoms were noted. She did not lay on Monday. Tuesday we had two eggs, bright and early in the morning, and I didn't give it another thought. Today, she was in the nest box this afternoon for about 2 hours, but there was again no egg. We decided to check her out this evening and feel a definite egg in her abdomen. However, she isn't in distress, she is eating, drinking, and running/flying around with the girls. Her tail is up, her vent looks normal (no signs of straining), and she is pooping normally. Is she egg bound or is she just holding it to lay in the morning? Would you give her a bath right away or wait to see if she passes it in the morning?

Should we not worry because she is new to this whole egg laying business?

I guess my other question is, do you treat for being egg bound anytime you feel an egg in the abdomen or wait for other symptoms to present themselves? (I feel dumb asking!!!)

Thanks!

I would leave her alone, first if she is egg bound, what could you do? Nothing that I know of, so just let her be , dont stress her, and let things happen as they will. By the way she is probably fine.
