New Hampshire
So today I found my New Hampshire inside the coop not wanting to come out. She had some ooze coming from her vent and on her feathers. When I picked her up as I massaged her below her vent she began to pass part of a soft egg shell. I brought her in and gave her a warm bath and then with an oiled glove felt around in her vent. I was able to pull out the rest of the shell. She is now back in the coop, she has had some water and some meal worms. Should I do anything else?

It sounds like you did a good job of removing the shell. I have read that some chicken owners flush out the vent some with an vinegar water solution so that the egg ooze does not create an environment for infection. She may not need that after her bath. The only other thing I can think of is just make double check the chickens have enough calcium in the diet.

Thanks scratch'n'peck -they have free choice oyster shell all the time and get layer pellets, she is still quiet and hanging out in the coop so guess I will see how it goes. I no longer see anything oozing when I massage her so think I will leave her to rest for now.I am hoping she will perk up soon and hopefully she will not get an infection

If you think any might be left you can give her a general antibiotic to help stop infection
Sounds like you did a great job helping her
Perhaps the antibiotics will also help perk her up. just a precautionary measure. hope this helps. Best wishes to you.

camccahey-you may want to post in the chicken behavior and egglaying forum. I have not had this problem but I have read it can be a tough habit to break-good luck and welcome!

If you want to fight infection, give them PRO-biotics, not ANTI-biotics. Anti means against and biotic means life. Antibiotics kill the good and bad bacteria that all living thing need to live. Probiotics actually gives them lots more good bacteria which tremendously helps their immune system. Then the good guys kill the bad guys.

I use raw milk kefir for my probiotics and my chickens live it.

Always, always seek a natural remedy for every situation. Pharmaceutical drugs are petrochemicals that harm the animals and people from the meat and eggs they eat. If you give it to the animals, you will be eating it.
