That is the best way to tell if there is an egg there. If the egg is very close to the vent then you may be able to feel it through her abdomen below the vent. If she has been laying mishappen eggs, then she could be having trouble passing one, or she could be developing a reproductive problem. You can also use ky jelly if you have it to try to lube around where you feel an egg if you do, to help it pass. You need to get a higher dose of calcium in them in cases of egg binding, in order to help with contractions, nutri drench has calcium, but not enough to be very helpful for egg binding. If you do feel an egg then the link I gave you has instructions on removing it manually if necessary, it's something that has to be done very carefully. Another article below with more information.
