i have an Americauna that may be egg bound. Is there anything I can do to help her? Two nights ago stayed on bottom perch, this morning she is just laying in her yard puffed, lethargic, her husband is trying everything to get her moving. Was laying an egg a night stopped about two weeks ago and now nothing.

Eggbound sucks because usually they can't be saved and need to be put down, however I called chicken whisperer about it once and he said sometimes the can be saved if you can get them to stop laying. To encourage this you lock them in a completely dark box with no food or water for 24 hours, then after 24 hours give her a water bowl then in 12-24 more hours give her seed but no oyster shell or lay pellets. Keep her on low calcium feeds for a while but don't encourage laying for the rest of the year. I don't know if she'll ever be good for laying again if to can get her to survive, but if she gets too bad you should maybe put her down

We had a hen who became eggbound every year, I am not sure why. I know that calcium is important to prevent the condition. The last time this happened, we did the traditional soak in warm water. You can also rub olive oil on her bum, and up into it just a bit (sorry to be graphic).

This year we actually put a needleless syringe full of olive oil down her beak/throat. That worked!

However, she did pass away due to infection I think, from other eggs that did not make it "through", but it was two years of additional life and she did keep laying.

I hope you have success.
