I didnt have the best of luck when I tried carton hatching either, so from there on I have always hatched them on their sides.
But I guess whatever works for people!
I have tried it a few times. I just felt like my hatches weren't as good. I don't know why, as I know alot of people say they have great hatches this way. I went back to the old way, and lay them on their sides (like mama hen does).
Wow, now this post is making me think twice, I tried it last hatch and I had a very bad hatch - I have a full bator now, so maybe I will try just laying them on their sides like I did the first time. Yikes, I have so many great chicks in this batch I'd hate to lose any.
Everybody needs to do what works best for them........I won't ever go back to hatching on their sides. I get much better hatches using the cartons....added benefit, it makes clean-up much easier.

That's a good question. I read somewhere that if you incubate in cartons, you should hatch in cartons and if you incubate laying down, you should hatch laying down.
