it keeps the blood from getting everywhere in the bator,, but thats bout it,, it only takes the chick 10 minutes or less to get out of the carton and start poopin everywhere,,lol.
and the ones i hatched that way didnt get shells on the unhatched.,, and theres a good thread on carton vs regular,,,,,,,thats what got me to try

Thanks, I read all thru the first one, some good info for me. Just one problem, I've lost my bator. Now how does one loose something that big? I am stumped, must be in the barn somewhere. I'm saving a batch of trial eggs, but may have to give up and buy a new one. I keep watching eBay. Humm. TSK

Hey,

No, the last batch of chicks I hatched went so poorly, I put the thing down in the barn (the bator) and must of put it some place "special" like I am prone to do. Now I cannot find it. My kids may have made something out of it, who knows. I was hoping to hatch some Marans eggs in it with all the cool new info I got from reading the above posts. Now I'm bator-less! I might be better off coming to the chicken swap and buying a bunch of Banties and let them do the brooding for me. I think my last hatch rate was less then 20%.

Wow...that is real low. What happened? I have had 2 hatches so far, and have had almost 90% with each. The only problem with the sale here, is that it seems like most everyone has extra roos to get rid of. Although I did see the bantam cochins that chicknmama got there this last week, and I tell you what, if I had been there earlier, those chickies would have been MINE!!!!

I am not sure what happend to that hatch, I think it was a humidity problem, the chicks pipped but could not get out of the shells. A "sticky" hatch I think they call it. I had a NEW LG from tractor supply and it was the first batch I tried. Always before I got about 80% or better. This time I will have a hydrometer for sure and those water wigglers for better temp control. I also plan to put the bator in my new basement for better room temp stability. If I'm lucky I'll be brooding chicks all winter. I have an order of about 60 chicks coming next week. Don't you just love playing chicken mamma when they are little and fuzzy?

I love seeing the baby chicks, but so far I've been lucky. I have had a broody hatch both times a few days before or after the eggs in the bator hatched. So I only have to take care of them for a few days before mama gets them! My poor splash hen is smaller than my dad's pigeons, and she has 18 chicks now!! I bet she was wondering how that happened?
