I just had this happen. I noticed as I grabbed it and thought ugh, a busted egg. But no other egg mess in the nest box.I had this happen last year, where eggs were being splattered heavily with yolk, so I asked my avian vet about it. He said the most likely explanation, especially in the absence of any shell at all, is that my hen was double ovulating. He said one yolk is getting a shell while the other yolk does not form a shell, but is breaking and covering the shelled egg as both are being laid. That made a lot of sense to me.
Back row far left is her normal color. Back row far right is the egg covered in yolk and like her paint didn't stick to it.
She's a newer laying pullet so I figured just a glitch.
The egg in the middle here was her next egg....
