Egg Eater - Possum / Rats?????

If there are empty shells left over, not a snake... very well could be a coon... I had one that had an egg fetish, ignored an open pen full of Call ducks that didn't get closed up early enough in favor of eggs... it even unwrapped a fully wrapped and wired down egg without setting off the trap release... and they can get out of the havahart type traps easily if not found quickly right after trapped...

Just another possibility...

There were empty shells in the coop where it first happened, but outside there were no empty shells.

Most live or "have a heart" traps are notoriosly poor at locking in the animals that spring it. Then the varmits just backs up raising the trap door and the prediator goes on its merry way.

Hint: place the eggs beneath the trap pan or triger in such a way that the egg stealing varmint gets frustrated and forgets what its doing. I does sound like you have a trap wise varmint.

My friend just told me the same thing. Ill try tonight. I didn't set the trap last night, got too busy/tired.
