Egg Emergency! *update* all died :(

Oh I hope your duckling makes it, but I think you'd have a fair chance if it is hatching time?

Its not fair when things go wrong for your first clutch, hope it survives

When I was sitting in the pen with my ducks, my hen jumped off her nest to chase (i hope it was just chase) a deadly snake that had come into the pen desperately trying to eat up her eggs. After a long hour

of attempting to get rid of the tiger snake i noticed she wouldnt get back on her nest

Turns out her eggs were hatching aswell and she showed no interest in going anywhere near them at all.
I spent ages stressing that because of the snakes interruption, she'd, well, 'forgotten' about her eggs or something. She ignored them all untill they were hatched and out of the nest. So maybe its the same with Bonnie? She's just giving them time to hatch?

Good luck!!

I hope that's it.

Also, with Clyde's aggressiveness towards the eggs, I'm worried if he'll beat up on the ducklings as well. What do you think?

p.s. the humidity is at 99%

That doesn't sound good to me. Can the humidity be too high?

I had heaps of trouble with my drake and the new babies
hmm.png

Theres always a good dad around... but... dont know if its worth bothering.
My drake was really pushy so not only hurting the babies, but kept pushing the hen away too

I sperated them and never have him around when there are babies anymore.

Are you guys going to keep your ducklings in a brooder or put them back with their mum? Cant wait to see photos of the happy babies if everything turns out ok

I'm not sure if they'll be in a brooder. Honestly we'll probably be carrying them around all day. If Clyde's mean to them we'll bring them in at night. I'm trying to find a nice play pen to put them in during the day, especially if Clyde is mean to them.

Just got up and had to read the going. Remove one towel if the humidity is to high and wait. The humidity is driven by the amount of moist surface, you reduce it it will go down. You can try to put them together with their mom, but I would be cautious with the drake. They may have to be separated from the drake until they are 3 month old, something to think about.

We're pretty sure duck x is dead. I haven't seen him move in hours and we can't see him breathing anymore

But we see cracks on three or four eggs and that one with the black spot too. So there's progress happening.

After we put them in the brooder and everything, when are they ready to go outside? Do you guys think a pen to contain them in is a good idea? How do we test if Clyde is going to be mean to them without getting the ducklings hurt?

I want them to hatch

I'm sorry to hear that X did not make it. I guess to much trauma took its toll. I'm glad to hear some of the others are getting ready. It will take at least 24 hours for them to come out once they pip the shell. You should keep the babies in the brooder for 2 weeks before you let them out. They are so tiny and predators, like hawks, can swoop them up. In nature they would be protected by their mom, but we don't know if she will take them back. Is this her first offspring? The drake should be separated with a fence, and just watch him. See how he behaves, perhaps he may be fine, but you don't know.
