Egg envy chicken!

31w Wyndotte is sitting on other chickens eggs for about 1.5hrs and then hopping out and yelling like she laid them!!!

Goes on with the rest of her day as normal. She is definately not laying yets. Is she psycho or what!

Just to add to my post above, I've just heard Balla y(Wyandotte) elling that she has laid an egg again. I went out and she has been sitting on an empty nest for the last hour. She is in beautiful condition, they are free range. Can anyone tell me what is wrong with her.

Sounds to me like she's getting close to laying her first egg. The don't just sing after they have laid - often they will sing before and even during laying. My Barnevelder will sing a couple of hours before laying then on and off till a couple of hours afterwards. Guess she just likes to let everyone know what's going on!

They will practice their egg song, and sitting in the nest, often for 2-3 weeks or so before they first lay. So, I'd say normal behaviour and eggciting times ahead!

Well, thats news to me. I thought they only 'sang' after they laid. That is a relief, save me lots of money on chicken psychologists! Thanks

For anyone interested, thought I'd update this post......Bella did lay her first egg early this week (10 weeks after this post), then went clucky the next day!!!!! I have been turfing her out of the nest to feed twice a day....she does get very indignant! The other Wyandotte also laid her first egg this week and they are 43 weeks old!

Mine have just started laying in the past week....my White Orpington is the town crier...she sings when everyone else is singing.....so funny!
