I WILL BE TURNING MY GARDEN SHED INTO A COOP. should i make an outside easy access for egg gathering?seems most coop sold come with one.why not gather from the inside of the coop and collect from the nest box? no chickens yet..but so excited..

We just completed our coop a month or so ago and we did make an outside access door to the nesting boxes for easy egg collection. I want to be able to get them without having to go inside the coop...I think it is just personal preference, no reason why you cannot collect the eggs from inside your coop.

What is your climate, if you live in an area that gets freezing temps you might want to put the nest boxes inside.

If you can walk into your coop, no need for the external nesting boxes. It just makes my life more difficult. I have to go in the garage anyway to feed and water, so it makes it easier to have nesting boxes inside there. The ones that are laid in the external nesting box freeze much quicker.

It's all up to you. :)

I like the option of being able to gather eggs from the outside. No worries about freezing here...

It's just that there are times I don't have time to put on my chicken shoes and I need to gather eggs... that's when gathering from the outside is awesome.

I guess that makes sense. I have my external nesting box in their run though, so that's no help to me :P

i'd say i live in mild climate..monterey area of calif.south of san francisco

I have an indoor egg box, which is easily accessible from an outside door so that I can just reach through without having to actually enter the coop. This keeps my shoes clean, and also avoided the problem of trying to build an outside nest box that might leak or be drafty. We are not good builders. The nest box is not dark or covered but all four of my hens use it without problems.
