I have 17 hens (1 Roo), born late last fall/winter. 7 are RI Reds, 4 Araucanas, 2 Australorps, 1 Red Star, 1 Yokohama, 1 Leghorn, and 1 Wyandotte. twice they've laid 13 eggs. the average is 7. they have a fenced pasture that i let them out to mid-day. they have open access to laying pellets, cracked corn, wheat, fresh water and plenty of regular greens and table compost. there are no signs of molting, pest or illnesses. the weather hasn't seemed to play a part either. my husband has crawled the whole pasture and not found any hidden nests. i'd say they're pretty spoiled! what's the deal, why so few eggs?
