egg keeping tips? how do you and for how long?

I quickly browsed the forum and didn't see anything about how to keep your eggs.

I've read don't wash they last longer. I've read wash and only keep in the fridge. So how do you do it?

What keeps your eggs the longest? How long do they last in the fridge? Do you wash, not wash?

(I know I can Google these, but its fun getting different opinions. I am terrified for my chicks to lay eggs and then I put them I. The fridge and they end up spoiled!)

I do a light wash and then store in the fridge. Just dawn dish soap and a sponge really fast. You can always check if they are bad with the float test. If it floats, it's gone bad.

I wash ours in wash water and store in the fridge. The ones which haven't been washed yet sit I'm a basket on the counter.

I am curious about how long they last too. I've heard lots of different opinions. (Ours don't usually last long enough to worry about it!)

According to a article in Mother Earth Magizne it say if youdonotwash the eggs theycan last up to three months orlonger on your kitchen counter. The egg when layed has a natural BLOOM on it which protects the egg from bateria and other nasty things. By washing them it removes the bloom allowing the shell to become proise letting air inside the shell. I DONOT wash my for this reson and have never had a problem. Ihave had chickens for over fifteen years. If the egg is dirty I wash it just before cracking it.

Funny, I tested my eggs and without washing on the counter they usually started going bad around 6-8 weeks. Wonder if its a breed thing or my altitude... ?

Maybe the difference between 6-8 weeks and up to 3 months is the conditions of your house? Meaning different temperatures and humidity levels affect how long eggs last. I am new to this so I can't say but my Grandmother kept store bought eggs in the fridge and farm fresh eggs on the counter. I have come to realize Granny was a genius...
