Two of our gals laid on the floor of their coop. (Going to get some wooden eggs this friday) Anyways this afternoon heard the 2 gals singing their song but I didn't want to go hunt them down and disturb them. When they were done, I waited an additional 10 minutes before I went on the hunt. (I'm becoming slightly obsessed with hunting for eggs, was always my favorite part of Easter) Found them in the corner on the floor of their coop, of course near poop but not ontop of it or anything as I did a quick scoop this morning.

So question... do I still toss them or are they keepable?

Of course they are keepable. Just wash the outside in water. Many say to not use cold water, but warm. There is a long explanation to this and I can explain it if you want me to. Some of our eggs get soiled by chicken gumdrops, so we just wash all our eggs. Many peeps do not wash and keep the protective coating on their eggs and do not even refrigerate them ( reasonable amount of time before being used) I refrigerate all my eggs since I do wash them. Skip getting those wooden eggs.. Have some real eggs in the nest..... Then place the girl about to lay into that nest. She will catch on quick. Best if you have hay or straw in your nest box. Feels more natural to the hen than wood shavings. JMO.

I only wash mine if they are dirty for some reason (either a little poopy or real dirt from a dust bath) and use tepid water as mentioned above. I feel so blessed that both of mine went right to the nest (straw in the nest, shavings in the coop) from the get go. I have three 19 week old EE'ers I'm waiting on now though.

You ROCK! Thank you. I get so overloaded with info sometimes. Definitely going to stick some eggs in their box. I still haven't decided if I want to put them in the fridge or keep them on the counter. I like the look of them on the counter and I'm thinking that since we're a family of 7 who usually eats eggs every morning we're going to go through them faster than I need to keep them in the fridge. But the girls are just starting to lay so who knows where we'll be egg wise in a couple of months. Either way I'm loving this adventure of learning and watching them grow.

I'm starting to think that our girls are like puppies when you have to train them to go somewhere other than the house. It's definitely fun though.
