so what causes this. Looked like a shell started to form. But barely any calcium on it.

It happens on occasion. So does a little tiny egg. There's nothing to be concerned about unless it happens often, which could be diet related. I found a mini egg last week, no bigger than a quarter.

That egg was laid before it was completely formed. Most likely caused by the hen getting a sudden fright, or stress. I got a similar one from one of my hens once, not long after my young son scared the daylights out of her. She actually laid it in front of me, while I was watching her.

If it's a young hen that just started laying then I wouldn't be concerned because her system is just getting up and running and a what I call a leather egg is expected.

If it's a hen that has been laying then I would look at nutrition. Do you give oyster shell? Do you crush and give them their egg shells back to replenish lost calcium?

Thanks everyone. They do get oyster shell. And it is a new hen. Only been laying a month or so

My husband found an egg on the coop floor this morning with no evidence of a shell... not even a ''leather one''. It looked as if it had just been cracked open in a pan. Is that normal? Anyone else ever had that happen? I have eight birds and only two of them have started to lay but all of them are right on that line of beginning to lay. If it was laid with a ''leather'' shell, would they eat it, leaving the raw egg intact? Thanks in advance for any info.
